Extra Neutral Alcohol & Industrial Ethanol (ENA, Rectified Spirit)

Pharmaceutical, sanitiser and solvent-grade ethyl alcohol to USP and BP monographs

Extra neutral alcohol (ENA) is ethyl alcohol distilled and rectified until the congeners are gone: typically 96% vol or higher, with methanol, aldehydes, esters, higher alcohols and fusel oil held to trace levels and a permanganate time long enough to show that nothing oxidisable is left. It sits above rectified spirit, which is distilled to strength but not polished to the same impurity profile, and above technical or industrial alcohol, which is sold on strength and water for use as a solvent or feedstock. On this desk the grades go to industrial, pharmaceutical and fuel buyers only: pharmaceutical manufacturers buying to the USP Alcohol or BP Ethanol (96 per cent) monograph for extraction, tinctures and excipient use; hand-sanitiser and disinfectant producers; paint, ink, coatings and cosmetics solvent users; and chemical plants making ethyl acetate and other derivatives. Undenatured ENA and rectified spirit are HS 2207.10. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2207.10 put the USA at 3.44 million MT, Brazil at 1.50 million MT, the Netherlands at 1.12 million MT, Hungary at 0.62 million MT and Pakistan at 0.45 million MT, a heading that bundles fuel-grade and neutral-grade alcohol together.

ENA is UN 1170, Class 3, and moves in steel or HDPE drums, IBCs and ISO tanks for pharmaceutical and sanitiser users, and in chemical-tanker parcels for solvent and chemical buyers. Undenatured alcohol is an excise product in most destinations, so the importer's licence, the excise-suspended movement paperwork and any end-use declaration have to be in place before the goods leave the distillery. Where a buyer counts the alcohol toward a renewable or bio-based claim, an ISCC PLUS or ISCC EU certificate and a PoS go with it. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
