Tomato Paste & Canned Tomatoes

Processed tomatoes are three trades sold off one short crop. Industrial paste (HS 2002.90) is a concentrate in 220 L aseptic bags in steel drums or 1,000 L+ bins, bought by sauce, ketchup, soup and re-packing plants on Brix (28-30% or 36-38%), hot break or cold break, Bostwick consistency, a/b colour, Howard mould count, lycopene and pH; retail and foodservice paste, also under HS 2002.90, is the same concentrate diluted or packed into 70 g, 400 g, 800 g and 2.2 kg tins and sachets at 22-24% or 28-30% Brix, the double concentrate of the West African and Middle East open market; and peeled and chopped tomatoes (HS 2002.10) are whole, chopped or diced fruit in juice or puree in 400 g and 2.5 kg tins, bought on drained weight under Codex CXS 13-1981. Codex CXS 57-1981 calls a concentrate paste from 24% natural total soluble solids. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put HS 2002 at USD 7.36 billion and about 5.06 million MT, with Italy at 44.2% of value, China at 16.4%, Spain at 8.5%, the USA at 6.8% and Portugal at 5.5%; under HS 2002.90 Italy declared 809,300 MT at an average USD 1,775/MT and China 1,196,600 MT at USD 1,005, and under HS 2002.10 Italy declared 1,474,500 MT at USD 1,232.

Northern hemisphere factories process from July to September and Chile, the largest southern hemisphere processor, from late January to early April; the World Processing Tomato Council's 11 September 2026 update puts the 2026 world crop at 39.1 million MT against 40.4 million MT processed in 2025. The buyers are food manufacturers, re-packers, supermarket chains, importer-distributors and foodservice suppliers in Europe, West and North Africa, the Middle East and Asia. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers tomato paste and canned tomatoes against the producer's certificate of analysis, a competent-authority health certificate, a certificate of origin, residue results against EU maximum residue levels for EU-bound lots, tin tested to 200 mg/kg under Regulation (EU) 2023/915, a halal certificate where the destination requires it and label checks per destination. Chinese paste for US and EU buyers is offered only with the plant and growing region named, because tomato products from Xinjiang are presumed made with forced labour under the US Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act and the EU Forced Labour Regulation applies from 14 December 2027; retail-packed paste is not offered for Nigeria, where it is on the import prohibition list. Drums, bins and cartons move in 20-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Send the product, Brix or style, pack, volume and discharge port.
