Onions, garlic and potatoes are bulb and tuber crops that are cured, stored and shipped for months after harvest, and each is bought on size, class, cure and storage history. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers four trades: red and pink onions (HS 0703.10) from India, Pakistan, Egypt, China and Türkiye; yellow onions (HS 0703.10) from the Netherlands, Spain, Poland, New Zealand, Egypt and Peru; fresh garlic (HS 0703.20), led by Chinese white garlic sold as Normal White and Pure White, with Egypt, Spain, Argentina and India; and ware and processing potatoes (HS 0701.90) from Egypt, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The UNECE standards grade onions into Class I and Class II by equatorial diameter and set garlic's minimum bulb diameter at 45 mm for Extra Class and 30 mm for Classes I and II. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put onions and shallots at USD 4.84 billion and about 8.69 million MT, led by the Netherlands (USD 1.00 billion), China (USD 578 million), Mexico (USD 450 million), India (USD 416 million), the USA (USD 397 million), Pakistan (USD 219 million) and Egypt (USD 181 million); garlic at USD 4.34 billion and 2.88 million MT, with China at USD 3.15 billion and 2.35 million MT, Spain at USD 476 million and Argentina at USD 180 million; and potatoes other than seed at USD 5.50 billion, led by France (USD 1.21 billion), Germany (USD 724 million), the Netherlands (USD 632 million), Canada (USD 373 million) and Egypt (USD 362 million). Seed potatoes (HS 0701.10) are a separate certified trade and are not offered.
Export policy and plant health move these trades as much as the harvest. India put a 40% duty on onion exports in August 2023, a USD 800/MT minimum export price in October 2023 and a ban from December 2023 to May 2024, reopened at a USD 550/MT minimum export price, applied a 20% duty from 13 September 2024 and withdrew it from 1 April 2025; it exported 1.55 million MT in the 2025-26 fiscal year and about 382,000 MT in April-June 2026, and its policy is confirmed for every shipment. Egypt banned onion exports from October 2023 to the end of March 2024. Fresh garlic from China has faced a US anti-dumping order since 1994, continued in May 2023, and enters the EU under licensed tariff quotas at 9.6% duty, with EUR 1,200 per MT added outside the quota. Ware potatoes enter the EU from non-EU countries only from a short list, Egypt among them, and only from areas where brown rot is known not to occur, and the EU ended approval of the potato sprout suppressant chlorpropham (CIPC), with the last grace period expiring on 8 October 2020. Every lot travels with a phytosanitary certificate from the origin's plant protection organisation, residues within the destination's maximum residue levels (Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 in the EU) and an inspection at loading where the buyer wants it. Onions travel at about 0-4°C and 65-75% relative humidity, garlic cold and dry at about -2°C to 1°C, and potatoes at about 7.5°C for table and 10°C for processing use, in reefer or actively ventilated containers, packed in 15-25 kg leno mesh or jute bags, garlic cartons and nets or 10 kg ventilated potato cartons, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Send the product, type, size band, pack, quantity, discharge port and shipment month, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.
Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
