Peeled & Chopped Tomatoes (Whole Peeled, Chopped and Diced in Tins)

Peeled and chopped tomatoes are the second half of the processing season: plum and round tomatoes steam- or lye-peeled, packed whole, chopped or diced in their own juice or in puree, and sealed in 400 g retail tins and 2.5 kg catering tins. They are bought on drained weight. Codex CXS 13-1981, the preserved tomatoes standard, sets drained weight at not less than 60% of the net weight of the container and requires a "whole" pack to be at least 65% whole or almost whole tomatoes by mass, so a 400 g tin with 240 g drained is the floor and better packers declare more. Buyers also specify the style (whole peeled, chopped, diced, crushed), the variety, the packing medium and its Brix, firming salts, where calcium salts are allowed to keep chopped pieces firm and US rules cap calcium at 0.045% of the finished weight, and the colour and defects allowance. The can matters as much as the fruit: tomatoes are acidic, EU Regulation (EU) 2023/915 caps inorganic tin in canned food at 200 mg/kg, lead is tested against the destination's limit, and under Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 bisphenol A is banned in food contact materials with coatings for fruit and vegetable cans allowed until 20 July 2028, so lined, BPA-free cans are asked for on EU contracts. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2002.10, tomatoes whole or in pieces, total USD 2.42 billion and about 1.96 million MT across 104 reporters, and Italy dominates: USD 1.82 billion and 1,474,500 MT at an average USD 1,232/MT, followed by Spain (USD 112 million, 126,700 MT at USD 887), the USA (USD 78 million, 86,500 MT at USD 904), Greece (USD 48 million, 48,400 MT at USD 998) and Portugal (USD 27 million, 34,400 MT at USD 773). Italy's own list of buyers is the retail map: the UK 235,600 MT, Germany 202,900 MT, the USA 149,300 MT, France 98,400 MT, Japan 97,000 MT and Australia 66,000 MT.

The buyer is a supermarket chain or its private-label packer, an importer-distributor, a foodservice supplier buying 2.5 kg tins for pizzerias and kitchens, or a sauce and ready-meal manufacturer. The crop sets the calendar: Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek and Californian factories pack from July to September, and the World Processing Tomato Council's 28 August 2026 update forecasts Italy at 6.35 million MT and Spain at up to 2.6 million MT, with heatwaves cutting yields and Brix in southern and western Europe; Chile and Australia process in the southern hemisphere summer. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers peeled and chopped tomatoes from established packers in these origins against the competent-authority health certificate, the packer's certificate of analysis for drained weight, Brix of the medium, pH, tin and microbiology, a certificate of origin, residue results against EU maximum residue levels under Regulation (EC) 396/2005 for EU-bound lots, a halal certificate where the destination requires it and label checks for language, date marking and importer details. Destinations with retail-pack import restrictions are checked before an offer. Cartons of 24 x 400 g or 6 x 2.5 kg move palletised or floor-loaded in 20-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Price is set per lot on style, drained weight, can and label; send the style, tin size, drained weight floor, carton count, label and discharge port.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
