Sulphur Suppliers for the DR Congo Copperbelt (via Dar es Salaam, Durban and Lobito)

Sulphur for the copper-cobalt leach plants of Katanga, landed at an ocean port and trucked 2,000 km inland

The DR Congo declared 1,774,100 t of sulphur imports in 2024 at USD 643 million, about USD 362 per tonne landed inland, after 2,694,900 t in 2023. The UAE supplied 38% of the 2024 tonnage, Qatar 28%, Kuwait 12%, Saudi Arabia 5% and Bahrain 2%, so 84% loaded inside the Gulf; South Africa supplied 5% and Oman 3%. The Strait of Hormuz has been severely restricted since 28 February 2026: loadings inside the Gulf move irregularly and are confirmed cargo by cargo. The buyers are the copper and cobalt producers of Kolwezi, Likasi and Lubumbashi, which burn sulphur to make the sulphuric acid that leaches their oxide ores. The Copperbelt as a whole imports about 2 million t of sulphur a year and makes about 6 million t of acid from it, with a further 2.5 million t of acid coming from copper smelters. The sulphur-burning plants are sized accordingly: the largest take the sulphur for 1,900 to 2,200 t a day of acid each, and a dozen smaller burners of 100 to 600 t a day sit at individual mines. Sulphur free on truck at Dar es Salaam was USD 615-630 per tonne at the start of March 2026 and USD 1,000-1,200 after transit collapsed, with small parcels at the top of the range; delivered values at southern African ports were USD 980-990 at the start of October.

No cargo reaches Katanga by sea. Dar es Salaam is the main entry: sulphur is discharged, bagged or loaded in bulk on trucks, and hauled through Zambia to the Kasumbalesa and Sakania border posts, with road freight to Kolwezi of about USD 280 per tonne. Durban, Richards Bay, Beira and Walvis Bay are the alternatives, and Lobito now takes bulk cargoes for the rail line to Kolwezi: a 50,000 t cargo from Oman arrived there in January 2026. Many plants receive sulphur in 1 t jumbo bags, so bagging at origin or at the port is part of the offer. Imports into the DR Congo are inspected before shipment under the country's pre-shipment inspection programme. CBIL brokers granular and prilled sulphur (99.8% min) CFR Dar es Salaam, Durban and Lobito in 10,000 to 50,000 t lots, loading Duqm and Sohar in Oman, India and the US Gulf, and the Saudi Red Sea subject to confirmation of loading, with SGS or Intertek certification at load and the producing refinery or gas plant named on the certificate of origin. A mine or acid producer that states its monthly tonnage, form, packing, entry port and LC-opening bank gets a firm answer; one without them gets a question first.

Questions buyers ask

Who buys sulphur in the DR Congo?
Copper and cobalt producers in Lualaba and Haut-Katanga provinces that run their own sulphur-burning acid plants, and merchant acid makers who supply smaller leach operations. The largest plants make 1,900 to 2,200 t of acid a day; a 1,000 t a day acid plant burns about 330 t of sulphur a day. Mines with a smelter nearby buy smelter acid instead, which is why sulphur demand moves with smelter output.
Which port should the cargo land at?
Dar es Salaam for most buyers: it is the shortest road haul and the port where sulphur is priced free on truck. Durban and Richards Bay add distance but have more trucks and backhaul; Beira and Walvis Bay serve particular transporters; Lobito suits a buyer with a rail allocation to Kolwezi and takes bulk. The buyer's transporter usually decides, so name the port in the enquiry.
Bulk or jumbo bags?
Many Katanga plants receive in 1 t jumbo bags because the product crosses two borders on flatbed trucks and is stored in the open. Bulk in tipper trucks or rail wagons is cheaper per tonne where the plant has a bulk intake. Sulphur can be bagged at the load port or at the discharge port; state which, because it changes the ship and the price.
Which origins can replace Gulf sulphur?
Oman, which loads at Duqm and Sohar outside the strait: a 30,000 t cargo from Duqm reached Dar es Salaam in 22 days in March 2026. India, and the US Gulf for Atlantic-side entry at Lobito or Walvis Bay. The Saudi Red Sea ports are offered with each lifting confirmed per cargo. Each offer names the producer and load port.
What inspection and documents are needed?
Quality and quantity certification at the load port, a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, and the pre-shipment inspection certificate required for imports into the DR Congo. Transit through Tanzania or South Africa and Zambia needs transit documents arranged by the buyer's clearing agent. Sulphur travels as UN 1350, class 4.1.
