EN590 10ppm Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD / AGO)

European Standard EN 590:2013 | Refinery cargoes for transport fleets & power generation

EN590 10ppm Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD, HS 2710.19) is the international benchmark specification for automotive gas oil powering modern heavy-duty commercial transport fleets, Euro 5 and Euro 6 passenger diesel engines, off-highway mining machinery, and utility-scale reciprocating power generation stations. The specification strictly caps total sulphur content at a maximum of 10.0 mg/kg (parts per million) by ultraviolet fluorescence (ASTM D5453 / EN ISO 20884), protecting catalytic exhaust after-treatment systems (DPF, SCR) from sulphur poisoning while keeping particulate and acid emissions to minimum regulatory thresholds. It commands a minimum cetane number of 51.0 (cetane index ≥ 46.0), providing optimal ignition delay, reduced engine knock, superior cold-start performance, and complete combustion efficiency.

CBIL operates exclusively with contracted refinery title holders, national oil companies, and vetted prime trading desks. We supply EN590 cargoes loaded out of accredited non-sanctioned refining centres: Sohar and Mina Al Fahal in Oman, Fujairah in the UAE, Jamnagar and Vadinar on India's West Coast, and major Mediterranean / ARA refining ports. Every consignment is inspected at the loading terminal flange by independent maritime surveyors (SGS, Saybolt, or Intertek) verifying density at 15°C (820.0 to 845.0 kg/m³), flash point (≥ 55.0°C), distillation recovery characteristics (≥ 95% vol recovered at 360°C), lubricity (HFRR wear scar diameter ≤ 460 µm at 60°C), water content (≤ 200 mg/kg), and cold filter plugging point (CFPP) matched to destination seasonal climate requirements (Class A through F, or Arctic Classes 1 to 4). Cargoes move in clean Medium Range (MR, 30,000–45,000 MT) and Long Range (LR1/LR2, 60,000–90,000 MT) product tankers against verified shipping documents and irrevocable documentary letters of credit (DLC), priced against published Platts or Argus regional gasoil benchmarks.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

EN590 10ppm Ultra-Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD / AGO) — buyer questions

How does CBIL prevent broker chains and speculative fraud in EN590 trading?

The international diesel market is heavily polluted by unauthorized intermediaries circulating fake allocation letters and speculative procedures. CBIL works under strict trade protocols: we only operate with verifiable refinery term-holders or authorized major trading positions with demonstrable title and laycan windows. Cargoes are sold against named terminals, authentic vessel schedules, and standard documentary LC terms payable against original bills of lading and independent SGS/Intertek certificates of quality and quantity at load port.

Why is Cold Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) critical for diesel destination delivery?

Diesel fuels contain natural paraffin waxes that crystallize when cooled, precipitating wax flakes that clog fuel filters and fuel injector pumps, causing sudden engine starvation. The EN 590 standard specifies different CFPP seasonal classes depending on destination climate: Class A (+5°C) and Class B (0°C) for tropical/summer delivery, Class D (-10°C) and Class F (-20°C) for temperate winter, and Arctic Classes 1 to 4 (-26°C down to -44°C) for severe northern winter operations. We ensure the refinery batch CFPP is matched precisely to the delivery window and discharge port coordinates.

How is lubricity restored in ultra-low sulphur diesel?

The hydrotreating refining process that strips sulphur down to ≤ 10 ppm also strips polar nitrogen and oxygen compounds that provide natural boundary lubrication to high-pressure common-rail fuel injection pumps. Under EN 590, refiners add specialized ester-based lubricity improver additives to guarantee a High-Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) maximum wear scar diameter of 460 microns at 60°C, verified on every certificate of analysis.
