Fresh Hass Avocados

Hass avocados by dry matter and count, 4 kg cartons by the reefer container

Avocados are bought on maturity and count. The UNECE FFV-42 standard sets maturity by dry matter, 21% minimum for Hass measured by drying to constant weight, and minimum weights of 80 g for Hass and 123 g for most other varieties, with size expressed in codes by fruit weight. Export fruit is packed in 4 kg single-layer cartons by count, the number of fruit to the carton, so a count 16 carton holds larger fruit than a count 22, and European buyers of Hass commonly take the middle counts; exporters' loading plans put about 20 pallets in a 40-ft reefer. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put fresh avocados (HS 0804.40) at USD 9.19 billion: Mexico at 1.19 million MT and an average USD 3,216/MT, Peru at 570,000 MT at USD 2,187, Colombia at 139,000 MT at USD 2,238, Spain at 139,000 MT, Kenya at 130,000 MT at USD 1,239, Chile at 107,000 MT at USD 2,933, South Africa at 83,000 MT at USD 2,471, the USA at 60,000 MT and New Zealand at 20,000 MT.

Mexico is the only origin with year-round volume: Michoacán's orchards sit at different altitudes and flower four times a year, so harvest never stops. Peru's main season runs from about May to August with the peak in June to August, complementing Mexico's heavier August-to-May flow, and Kenya's main crop runs from March to August with a second crop from October to December. Avocados are carried at about 5-8°C for Hass and Fuerte at 90% relative humidity; they produce and respond strongly to ethylene, keep four to five weeks in normal air, and controlled atmosphere at 2-5% oxygen and 3-10% carbon dioxide can extend Hass to about six weeks, which matters on long routes. The documents follow the destination: a phytosanitary certificate from the origin's plant protection organisation, GlobalG.A.P. certification for European retail, pesticide residues within the destination's maximum residue levels (the EU default is 0.01 mg/kg where no specific limit is set), and the importing country's market-access protocol, which for China means orchards and packhouses registered with its customs authority. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers Hass avocados from packers and exporters in these origins against the phytosanitary certificate, a dry matter result and an independent inspection at loading where the buyer wants it. Cargo moves on FOB, CFR and CIF terms in reefer containers with the atmosphere set per voyage. Send the variety, count range, carton, weekly volume, whether you ripen on arrival and the discharge port.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Fresh Hass Avocados — buyer questions

Why does dry matter matter for Hass avocados?

Dry matter is the maturity test. Fruit picked too early never ripens to a good eating quality and shrivels or rubbers instead. The UNECE FFV-42 standard sets 21% minimum for Hass, measured by drying to constant weight, and many buyers ask for a higher figure in their own specification. Ask for the dry matter result on the lot, not just the harvest date.

What does avocado count mean?

The number of fruit in a 4 kg single-layer carton. A lower count means larger fruit: count 12 or 14 is large, count 20 or 22 is small. Prices differ by count, and markets differ in the counts they want, so an offer should state the count split of the container, not just a total tonnage.

Which origin supplies avocados when?

Mexico ships all year from Michoacán, where four overlapping flowerings keep harvest going. Peru's main season is about May to August, peaking in June to August, and Kenya's main crop runs from March to August with a second from October to December. Chile, Colombia, South Africa and Spain add their own windows.

How are avocados shipped over long routes?

In reefer containers at about 5-8°C and 90% relative humidity. Avocados are highly sensitive to ethylene and keep four to five weeks in normal air; controlled atmosphere at 2-5% oxygen and 3-10% carbon dioxide can extend Hass to about six weeks. The atmosphere setting and pulp temperature at loading should be on the shipping documents.
