Cochin & Calicut whole, split and powder by volatile oil

CBIL brokers Indian dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) from the Kerala and Karnataka belts in the grades the trade contracts against — Cochin ginger (unbleached, skin retained, the pungent grade extractors specify), Calicut ginger, bleached and unbleached whole, split, and powder milled to 60–80 mesh. Two constituents price the lot: volatile oil, typically 1.5–3%, which carries the aroma, and gingerol, which carries the pungency and is the specification oleoresin extractors write their yield expectation against. Bleached ginger — lime-treated for a uniform pale appearance — is a cosmetic grade for retail and visible applications; it does not out-perform unbleached material on either constituent, and extractors deliberately avoid it. Fibre content matters if you are grinding, because high-fibre root mills poorly and blinds screens.

Dry ginger sits apart from the other roots in this family because it is a dual-trade commodity: the spice grinding, beverage and bakery trade buys it as a flavour, while the oleoresin and nutraceutical trade buys it as a feedstock on assay. Specify which side you are on — spice buyers care about colour, fibre and mesh; extraction buyers care about volatile oil and gingerol and will accept material a retail packer would reject. Lots are arranged against SGS or Intertek certification of volatile oil, moisture, total and acid-insoluble ash, heavy metals to Codex limits, pesticide residue and micro, with steam-sterilised and ETO-free options for EU and US entry. Supply is structured in 20kg and 25kg PP bags and lined cartons, container-load, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms.
