Moringa Leaf & Powder

Shade-dried leaf and 80–100 mesh powder by protein and colour

CBIL arranges supply of moringa (Moringa oleifera) leaf and powder from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Sri Lankan growing areas in the forms the trade buys: whole dried leaf, tea-cut for infusion packing, and powder milled to 80–100 mesh. The commercial markers are green colour retention and the nutritional profile — protein typically 25–30% on a dry basis, with the iron, calcium and vitamin A content that supplement and functional-food buyers write into their spec sheets. Colour is not cosmetic here: it is the visible proxy for how the leaf was dried. Shade-dried leaf holds a deep green; sun-dried or hot-air-dried leaf goes khaki, loses vitamin content and cannot be corrected downstream, which is why we source shade-dried material by default and are explicit when a lot is not.

Moringa is one of the few botanicals where the leaf is bought for its own nutritional load rather than as an extraction feedstock, so buyers pick it over the root and seed lines for green-powder blends, smoothie and functional-beverage bases, capsule and tablet packing, herbal tea and infusions, and cosmetics. Sieve mesh matters for the powder trade — 80 mesh suits capsules and tablets, 100 mesh suits beverage dispersion where mouthfeel carries. Leaf carries a higher inherent microbiological load than root material because it is harvested close to the ground and handled in leaf form, so we arrange steam-sterilised or ETO-free lots for EU and US entry as standard, with SGS or Intertek certification of moisture, ash, protein, heavy metals to Codex limits, pesticide residue and micro (total plate count, yeast and mould, Salmonella, E. coli). Supply is structured in 20kg and 25kg PP bags and lined cartons, container-load, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, with organic-certified lots subject to crop.

Moringa Leaf & Powder — buyer questions

Why does moringa powder colour vary so much between suppliers?

Drying method, almost entirely. Shade-dried leaf holds a deep green and retains its vitamin content; sun-dried or aggressively hot-air-dried leaf turns khaki-brown and loses it. Nothing downstream fixes it — colourants are an adulterant and a regulatory risk. If green is what your customer sees, buy on a retained sample and specify shade-dried in the contract.

What mesh should I specify for moringa powder?

80 mesh is standard for capsule and tablet packing where dispersion does not matter. Go to 100 mesh for beverages and green blends, where coarser powder is gritty in the mouth. Finer than 100 adds cost and, in most applications, no functional benefit.

Do I need steam-sterilised moringa?

For EU and US food entry, in practice yes. Leaf is harvested close to the ground and handled in leaf form, so it carries a higher baseline microbiological load than root material. We default to steam-sterilised or ETO-free lots for European destinations — ETO-treated material cannot enter the EU — with micro certification at load port.
