ISCC EU Certified Bio-Methanol & E-Methanol

Second-generation low-carbon biomethanol | Dual-fuel maritime bunkering & FuelEU compliance

Bio-methanol and synthetic e-methanol represent the premier commercially operational liquid alternative fuel for global container shipping and chemical decarbonization. Produced through the catalytic conversion of anaerobic biomethane from municipal waste, agricultural residues, and black liquor gasification, or via synthetic power-to-X routes combining captured biogenic CO₂ with green hydrogen, bio-methanol drops directly into existing liquid handling infrastructure without requiring cryogenic storage. Chemically identical to fossil methanol, it meets full IMPCA purity standards (≥ 99.85 wt%) while slashing lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by 65% to 90%+ on a well-to-wake basis.

With international maritime environmental mandates tightening—including the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) for shipping, the FuelEU Maritime regulation, and IMO Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) targets—major global ocean carriers (Maersk, CMA CGM, COSCO) are actively deploying dual-fuel methanol vessel fleets. CBIL brokers certified bio-methanol and synthetic e-methanol parcels, coordinating physical bunkering transfers and bulk cargo deliveries into core bunkering hubs: Rotterdam, Antwerp, Singapore, Shanghai, and US Gulf terminals. Each consignment is audited under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU / ISCC PLUS) system, accompanied by a legally compliant Proof of Sustainability (PoS) documenting the certified supply chain, GHG emission reduction percentage, and mass-balance chain of custody. Available on FOB, CFR, CIF, and delivered bunker (ex-pipe / bunker barge) terms.

ISCC EU Certified Bio-Methanol & E-Methanol — buyer questions

What documentation proves that bio-methanol qualifies for FuelEU Maritime and EU ETS?

Every consignment must be accompanied by an authentic Proof of Sustainability (PoS) issued under an EU-recognized voluntary certification scheme, predominantly ISCC EU. The PoS outlines the certified GHG emission savings (must exceed the minimum 65% or 70% threshold), defines the sustainable feedstock category (e.g., Annex IX Part A advanced waste biomass), and provides the full audited mass-balance tracking from primary producer to bunkering vessel.

Can conventional methanol engines and bunkering barges handle bio-methanol?

Yes. Bio-methanol and e-methanol are 'drop-in' replacements that share identical chemical and physical properties with fossil methanol. They require no engine modifications, special metallurgy, or unique bunkering equipment beyond standard methanol safety protocols (such as nitrogen purging, double-walled piping, and alcohol-resistant foam fire suppression systems).
