Feed Corn (Yellow Maize, Feed Grade)

US No. 2 / No. 3 yellow corn for feed mills & integrators

Feed corn is bought on a grade and four numbers. The grade is the US standard (No. 2 or No. 3 yellow corn) or its local equivalent, and the numbers are moisture at 14–15.5% maximum, broken corn and foreign material at 3–5%, damaged kernels at 5–7% and test weight at 54–56 lb/bushel, with heat damage capped separately because it signals a lot that has already started to spoil. The numbers that decide whether a cargo is accepted, though, are aflatoxin (typically 20 ppb maximum, 10 or lower in some markets) and the other mycotoxins, fumonisin, DON and zearalenone, which a feed mill tests on arrival because they pass straight into the animal. GM status is the other gate: the United States, Brazil and Argentina ship GM corn, Ukraine and South Africa can supply non-GM, and a market that requires a non-GM or an identity-preserved certificate has just changed its origin list.

Buy feed corn as a cargo when you run a feed mill, a poultry, dairy or swine integration, or a feed import business with silo capacity; and buy the origin that clears your GM, mycotoxin and phytosanitary rules before comparing price, because a cheap cargo that fails on aflatoxin is a claim rather than a bargain. Parcels run from containers and 5,000 MT coasters for island and smaller markets to Supramax and Panamax bulk cargoes into the larger importers of the Middle East, North Africa and Southeast Asia, priced against CBOT or the FOB Brazil and Argentina references with a freight and quality differential. CBIL brokers feed corn against independent certification of grade, moisture, BCFM, damage, test weight, aflatoxin and the mycotoxin panel at load, with fumigation and phytosanitary documents to the destination's rules, in bulk and containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms.

Feed Corn (Yellow Maize, Feed Grade) — buyer questions

What is the difference between US No. 2 and No. 3?

Tolerances. No. 2 allows about 3% broken corn and foreign material, 5% damaged kernels and needs 54 lb/bushel test weight; No. 3 loosens those to 4%, 7% and 52 lb. Most feed mills buy No. 2 or a No. 3 with a discount and blend. The mycotoxin limits are not part of the grade and must be specified separately, which is where feed buyers get caught.

GM or non-GM?

Depends entirely on your market's rules and your customers. US, Brazilian and Argentine corn is GM as standard; Ukraine and South Africa can supply non-GM with a certificate, at a premium and with an identity-preserved chain. A market that bans GM feed has, in effect, chosen its origins. Tell us the rule and we source to it.

Why do mycotoxins matter more than the grade?

Because they pass through the animal into eggs, milk and meat, and a feed mill tests every arrival for them. Aflatoxin at 20 ppb is the common ceiling, 10 ppb or lower in dairy markets, with fumonisin and DON capped for swine and poultry. Specify the limits in the contract, have the cargo tested at load by an independent laboratory, and reject the lot on the certificate rather than on arrival.

Bulk or containers?

Bulk from 5,000 MT upward where the port and silo can receive it; it is far cheaper per tonne. Containers in bulk-loaded or bagged form for island markets, smaller mills and buyers without silo discharge. Container corn is fumigated in the box and needs a phytosanitary certificate matched to the destination, which we arrange with the shipper.
