Anhydrous Ammonia CFR Mersin, Türkiye

Three-quarters of a million tonnes a year of imported ammonia, at 0% duty, with Oman now the largest origin

Türkiye is a steady importer of anhydrous ammonia: it declared 827,968 t in 2023, 796,754 t in 2024 and 753,877 t in 2025, worth USD 358.5 million in 2025, an average of USD 476 per tonne CIF after USD 456 in 2024. The origins move from year to year. In 2025 Oman supplied 273,999 t (36.3%) at USD 486/t, Algeria 102,905 t (13.7%) at USD 461, Qatar 92,392 t (12.3%) at USD 478, Egypt 65,560 t (8.7%) at USD 436, Saudi Arabia 54,640 t (7.2%), Libya 36,009 t (4.8%) at USD 559 and the United States 28,031 t (3.7%), with other origins making up the remaining 13.3%. In 2024 Algeria had been the largest at 33.1%, followed by Oman at 17.9% and Trinidad and Tobago at 13.9%, and in 2023 Egypt (20.5%) and Trinidad (20.3%) led. Qatar and Saudi Arabia, 19.5% of the 2025 tonnage, load inside the Gulf, where shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted since early 2026, so their share is the part of the supply most likely to move to Oman, North Africa and the Atlantic. Türkiye also re-exported 206,734 t in 2025, to the Netherlands, Spain, Morocco, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Bulgaria among others. Ammonia is the nitrogen feedstock for the fertilisers whose import duty Türkiye cut to zero in spring 2026: urea in March, and ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, calcium ammonium nitrate, DAP and NPK grades by decision 11147 of 2 April 2026, which keeps the price of imported ammonia and of imported finished fertiliser side by side for Turkish producers.

The duty question is settled in the tariff. Türkiye's 2026 Import Regime Decision lists 2814.10.00.00.00 at 5.5% for third countries with a footnote that applies 0%, and 0% for EU, preferential and GSP origins, from 1 January 2026; the EU suspended its own ammonia duty only from May 2026, within a quota, and Türkiye's July 2026 amendment (decision 11506) left the ammonia line unchanged, so imports into Türkiye were already duty-free. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers anhydrous ammonia (99.5% NH3 minimum) CFR Mersin and the other Turkish discharge ports, carried at minus 33 °C on fully refrigerated gas carriers, with quantity and quality inspection at load and the producer and load port named before any offer. The receiver's refrigerated tank space, jetty limits and ship-shore compatibility are confirmed for the laycan before a ship is nominated. Send the quantity and parcel size, the discharge port and terminal, the laycan, the importer of record, the pricing basis and the payment terms with the issuing bank, and the enquiry is screened and worked against them.

Questions buyers ask

What import duty does Türkiye charge on anhydrous ammonia?
None in 2026. The Import Regime Decision in force from 1 January 2026 lists GTİP 2814.10.00.00.00 at 0% for EU, preferential and most GSP origins and at 5.5% for third countries, with a footnote applying 0%. The July 2026 amendment did not change the line. VAT and any other import charges are confirmed by the importer's customs broker.
Did Türkiye follow the EU's 2026 suspension of ammonia duties?
It did not need to. The EU agreed in May 2026 to suspend its ammonia duty for a year within a quota; Türkiye's tariff had already applied 0% to ammonia from every origin since 1 January 2026, and its July 2026 alignment left the line as it was. Separately, Türkiye zeroed duties on urea in March 2026 and on ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, CAN, DAP and NPK grades in April.
Where does Türkiye's ammonia come from?
By Türkiye's own declarations, Oman supplied 36.3% of 2025 imports, Algeria 13.7%, Qatar 12.3%, Egypt 8.7%, Saudi Arabia 7.2%, Libya 4.8% and the United States 3.7%, with other origins making up 13.3%. The mix changes year to year: Algeria led in 2024 and Egypt and Trinidad in 2023. Each CBIL offer names the producer and load port.
What ship carries ammonia to Mersin?
A fully refrigerated gas carrier with cargo at minus 33 °C and near-atmospheric pressure, discharging into refrigerated shore tanks. The parcel is sized to the tank space the terminal confirms for the laycan, and the jetty's length, draft, manifold and vapour-return arrangement are checked before the ship is nominated.
Can CBIL also fix the ship?
Yes. LaycanDesk, CBIL's chartering desk, prices refrigerated gas carriers for ammonia, so a CFR and an FOB figure can be compared for the same parcel.
