Bitumen Supplier, Dar es Salaam
East Africa's largest bitumen port, and the only one that already pays for European provenance
Tanzania declared 57,956 tonnes of bitumen imports in 2024, the largest declared volume on the East African coast. The UAE supplied 71 per cent at about USD 500 per tonne CIF, but 26 per cent came from Spain and the United Kingdom at around USD 800 — the same port, the same year, a USD 300 premium paid for European refinery grade and provenance. Buyers in Dar es Salaam are also testing further afield: the 2025 exporter declarations to Tanzania so far show Spain, Thailand, Colombia and Lithuania. Dar es Salaam is at the same time the transit port for Zambia (16,327 t declared in 2024), Malawi (9,432 t) and Rwanda, so tonnage discharged here is often on its way inland.
CBIL brokers penetration 60/70 and 80/100 and performance grades into Dar es Salaam in new steel drums and in bulk for receivers with heated storage, on CFR or CIF terms, with inspection at filling and the refinery named on the certificate of origin. For a Tanzanian importer the question is rarely whether bitumen is available; it is whether a named-refinery cargo can land between the Gulf drum price and the European one with the documents to prove where it came from. We work from a buyer's grade, quantity, delivery basis and timing, and we quote only against those.

Questions buyers ask
- Why does European bitumen land in Tanzania at a premium?
- Named-refinery product with full specification and origin documents commands a premium from contractors and mining-road programmes that cannot afford a failed batch. The premium is for certainty and grade, not freight.
- Can a cargo discharged at Dar es Salaam be sold inland?
- Yes. Drums move under transit bond by road and rail to Lusaka, Lilongwe, Kigali and Lubumbashi; the landed cost inland is the Dar es Salaam price plus corridor transport.
- What lot sizes are workable?
- Drummed lots from one container upward; bulk from about 2,000 tonnes for receivers with heated tankage. Emulsion and cutback producers usually buy base bitumen in drums.
- Which grades are used in Tanzania?
- Penetration 60/70 and 80/100 for roads, with performance grades on selected projects; cutbacks and emulsions are produced locally from base bitumen.
