Aqueous Ammonia / Ammonium Hydroxide (20–25% NH₃)

Industrial ammonium hydroxide solution | Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) & water treatment

Aqueous ammonia (HS 2814.20), also known chemically as ammonium hydroxide or ammonia water, is an alkaline aqueous solution of ammonia gas dissolved in high-purity demineralized water, formulated at concentrations ranging from 20.0% to 25.0% NH₃ by weight. Unlike pressurized anhydrous gas, aqueous ammonia operates at near-atmospheric vapor pressures (typically 30 to 60 kPa at 20°C for a 25% solution), dramatically lowering the on-site handling risk and regulatory burden for industrial operators. It is the reagent of choice for Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) NOx emission control systems installed on coal-fired power utilities, gas turbine combined-cycle plants, cement kilns, and municipal waste-to-energy incinerators.

CBIL coordinates containerized ISO-tank parcels (20 to 24 MT net payload) and multi-container FCL movements of 1,000-litre UN-approved intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) from audited chlor-alkali and inorganic chemical manufacturing facilities across Europe, India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. The product is manufactured with ultra-low heavy metal thresholds (iron ≤ 2 ppm, chloride ≤ 1 ppm, heavy metals as Pb ≤ 1 ppm) and zero suspended sediment, preventing nozzle clogging and catalyst poisoning in high-temperature flue-gas injection grids. Every shipment is delivered with a comprehensive Certificate of Analysis (COA) specifying exact titrimetric ammonia concentration, specific gravity (0.910–0.925 at 15°C), and clarity, supplied on FOB, CFR, CIF, and DDP delivered site terms.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Aqueous Ammonia / Ammonium Hydroxide (20–25% NH₃) — buyer questions

Why do industrial plants prefer 25% aqueous ammonia over anhydrous ammonia for SCR?

Anhydrous ammonia requires pressurized storage, complex hazard-management plans (PSM/RMP), and extensive public evacuation zones due to toxic vapor cloud risks. In contrast, 25% aqueous ammonia has an evaporative pressure below 1 atmosphere at standard storage temperatures, allowing atmospheric vented tank storage with simple bunding, dramatically simplifying plant insurance and local environmental permitting.

What prevents off-gassing and pressure build-up during maritime ISO tank transit?

Ammonia solubility in water decreases as temperature rises. For ISO tank shipments through tropical maritime corridors, tanks are loaded to an optimal ullage (typically 90–92% volumetric fill) and equipped with calibrated dual pressure-relief valves set at 2.65 bar (0.265 MPa). White-painted reflective tank shells or insulated container jackets are utilized to minimize solar thermal absorption.
