Drummed Bitumen (New Steel Drums & Polybags)
Penetration 60/70 & 80/100 in 180 kg new steel drums and 300 kg polybags in 20ft FCLs
Drummed bitumen under HS 2713.20 is the essential packaging format that keeps global highway construction moving where bulk asphalt heating terminals do not exist. While major metropolitan coastal corridors receive 5,000 to 10,000 MT hot liquid asphalt via specialized insulated bitumen tankers at 150°C–160°C, regional paving contractors, provincial public works departments, and landlocked nations across East Africa (Rwanda, Uganda, DR Congo, Burundi, South Sudan), the Caribbean, and the Indian Ocean operate without heated shoreline storage. For these buyers, asphalt must arrive in cold, solid, weatherproof packaging that can be transported across rough inland road corridors, stored in ambient unheated yards for up to 12 months without thermal degradation, and decanted batch-by-batch on site using portable drum decanters.
CBIL brokers factory-filled penetration grade bitumen 60/70 and 80/100 packed at primary Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian refineries into cold packaging formats engineered to eliminate rupture and leakage in tropical transit: 1. Brand-New Cold-Rolled Steel Drums: Fabricated from 0.6 mm–0.9 mm cold-rolled steel sheets with spiral triple-seam heads, twin rolling hoops, and press-fit bung closures. Filled at calibrated tare weights with 150 kg, 180 kg, or 200 kg net penetration bitumen. Drums are loaded 80 to 110 drums per 20ft dry container (16.0 to 19.8 MT net payload), braced with wooden dunnage and heavy strapping to prevent shifting during maritime handling. 2. Polybags / Jumbo Bags (300 kg & 1,000 kg Cold Bags): Multi-layer polypropylene outer bags with specialized internal melting film liners (polyethylene melting point <110°C). The inner bag melts completely into the asphalt binder during hot-mix heating without altering penetration or ductility specifications, producing zero steel drum scrap on site. Loaded 20 MT palletized per 20ft FCL.
Every consignment is verified at load port by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Intertek against ASTM D946 and EN 12591 standards: penetration at 25°C, softening point (ring and ball 49°C–56°C for 60/70), ductility (≥100 cm), flash point (≥250°C), and loss on heating (<0.2%). For mid-tier road contractors and regional distributors, CBIL supports commercial starter-trials of 2 to 5 containers (35 to 90 MT) with up to 21 days detention free-time on container liner bills of lading, scaling to regular monthly shipments aligned with local paving schedules.

Drummed Bitumen (New Steel Drums & Polybags) — buyer questions
Why buy drummed bitumen rather than bulk tanker cargo?
Bulk liquid bitumen requires a dedicated, heated receiving terminal with insulated holding tanks, continuous boiler loops, and specialized hot-asphalt road tankers. If your discharge port lacks a heated terminal, or if the construction site is situated hundreds of kilometres inland across mountainous or border corridors, drummed bitumen is the only viable commercial choice. Drums can be transported by standard flatbed trucks and stored outdoors at ambient temperature indefinitely.
How many steel drums fit into a 20ft container?
Depending on drum dimensions and tare weight, a standard 20ft dry container accommodates 80 drums loaded in a single layer on wooden pallets, or up to 110 drums floor-loaded in two tiers (typically around 19.8 MT net payload). All container stuffings include heavy dunnage, corner battens, and strap bracing to prevent drum deformation during ocean transit.
Do you supply the 300 kg melting polybags?
Yes. Polybags are engineered with an inner film liner that melts completely into the bitumen during thermal decanting at the asphalt mixing plant at temperatures above 115°C. This eliminates the disposal problem and residual scrap value associated with steel drums.
What is the minimum order quantity for a trial?
We support regional contractors with starter-trials of 2 to 5 containers (approximately 36 to 90 MT), backed by 14 to 21 days detention free-time at the destination port to allow straightforward customs clearance and trucking dispatch.
