Anatase Titanium Dioxide (Paper, Fibre, Ceramic and Pharma Grades)

Sulphate-process anatase for paper, synthetic fibres, ceramics, and pharma and food grades where permitted

Anatase is the other crystal form of titanium dioxide, made almost only by the sulphate process, and it is chosen where rutile's higher hardness and photo-activity are a problem or its extra opacity is not needed. Anatase is softer, so it wears spinnerets and guides less in polyester, nylon and viscose fibre delustering and wears paper machine wires less as a filler; it has a bluer, cleaner white for ceramics, enamels and indoor coatings; and high-purity uncoated anatase is the usual pharmaceutical and food grade. ISO 591-1 sets anatase type A1 at 98% minimum TiO2 and A2 at 92%, and pure anatase has a density of 3.8 against 4.2 for rutile. The certificate shows TiO2 content, whiteness, oil absorption, pH, water-soluble salts, sieve residue and, for fibre grades, dispersion and particle size; pharma and food grades add heavy-metal limits against the pharmacopoeia or food additive specification. Tariff classification depends on form: uncompounded titanium oxides are HS 2823.00, and pigments based on TiO2 below the 3206.11 threshold fall in 3206.19, so the producer's declared code is confirmed per grade. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put 2823.00 at about USD 580 million, with China USD 112 million and 54,000 MT, India USD 77 million and 61,000 MT, Germany USD 70 million, Japan USD 67 million and the Republic of Korea USD 52 million, and 3206.19 at about USD 1.43 billion, led by Germany at USD 225 million. Those are declared values for the codes, not offers.

Food and pharma status differs by market and is checked for each destination. In the EU, titanium dioxide (E171) has not been authorised as a food additive since 7 August 2022 under Regulation (EU) 2022/63, but it remains authorised as a colour in medicines, which the European Commission reaffirmed in a Staff Working Document of August 2025. JECFA's full evaluation published on 25 October 2024 kept the acceptable daily intake "not specified", and other markets set their own rules. The buyer is a paper or decor-paper mill, a polyester, nylon or viscose fibre plant, a ceramic glaze or enamel frit maker, an indoor paint plant, a pharmaceutical coating or capsule maker, or a food manufacturer in a market that permits it. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers anatase titanium dioxide from sulphate-process producers and trader positions in China, Germany, Japan, Korea and India against a certificate of analysis per lot, the technical data sheet, a safety data sheet, a certificate of origin, the REACH registration for EU imports, and for pharma or food grades the producer's compliance statement to the named monograph or additive specification. It ships in 25 kg paper or PE-lined bags on pallets or jumbo bags in dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, priced per MT on grade; store dry and sealed. Send the use, the grade and standard, the destination market, tonnage and discharge port, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Why use anatase instead of rutile?

Anatase is softer, so it is less abrasive on fibre spinnerets and paper machine wires, and it gives a cleaner blue-white in ceramics and indoor coatings. Rutile gives more opacity and outdoor durability. ISO 591-1 sets anatase A1 at 98% TiO2 minimum.

Can titanium dioxide be used in food?

Not in the EU: E171 has not been authorised as a food additive since 7 August 2022 under Regulation (EU) 2022/63. It remains authorised in EU medicines, reaffirmed by the Commission in August 2025. JECFA's 2024 evaluation kept the ADI not specified, and other markets set their own rules, so the destination's current food additive list is checked before any food-grade enquiry is worked.

Which HS code applies?

Uncompounded titanium oxides are HS 2823.00; titanium dioxide pigments with 80% or more TiO2 on dry matter are 3206.11 and other TiO2-based pigments 3206.19. The producer's declared code for the specific grade is confirmed before shipment.
