Rubber Grade Carbon Black (ASTM D1765 N-Series)

Rubber grade carbon black is reinforcement, not pigment, and a tyre or rubber goods compounder buys it by the ASTM D1765 N-number, which encodes two things: the first digit groups the particle size (the 200 series is finer and more reinforcing, the 700 series coarser and softer) and the grade pins a target surface area and structure. Surface area is read as iodine adsorption number and structure as oil absorption number (OAN). The typical values published in ASTM D1765 are N220 at 121 g/kg iodine and 114 ml/100 g OAN, N330 at 82 and 102, N339 at 90 and 120, N550 at 43 and 121, and N660 at 36 and 90. The tread grades (N220, N234-type, N330, N339) carry abrasion resistance; N550 is the extrusion grade for inner liners, hoses and profiles; N660 and N774 are the semi-reinforcing grades for carcasses, sidewalls, mounts and general moulded goods. Beyond iodine and OAN the certificate should show pour density, heating loss, ash, sieve residue (325 mesh), fines and pellet hardness, because dispersion in the mixer and dust in the plant depend on the pellet, not the chemistry. Carbon black is HS 2803.00. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under 2803.00 sum to about USD 5.88 billion across 90 reporters: China USD 1.20 billion and 962,000 MT (20.4%), India USD 475 million and 375,000 MT, Germany USD 443 million and 178,000 MT, the Republic of Korea USD 391 million and 256,000 MT, the USA USD 378 million and 142,000 MT, Egypt USD 234 million and 113,000 MT, the Netherlands USD 211 million and 73,000 MT, Thailand USD 183 million and 119,000 MT and Japan USD 178 million. The heading also holds specialty and conductive blacks, so those are declared export values for the whole code, not rubber-grade offers.

The buyer is a tyre plant or retreader, a conveyor belt, hose or V-belt maker, a moulded and anti-vibration goods plant, a footwear compounder or a distributor serving them. EU imports need the substance registered under REACH by the EU importer or the producer's only representative, and the SDS in the language of the destination. Trade-remedy status is checked by destination and origin at enquiry: India's anti-dumping duties on rubber carbon black lapsed when the Finance Ministry declined to extend them in 2021, and no current EU or US anti-dumping measure on carbon black was found for this page. Keep bags dry and off the floor, away from oxidisers and ignition sources, because carbon black picks up moisture and dusts when bags are torn.
