Refined glycerine (glycerol) under HS 2905.45 is a clear, colourless, odourless, viscous trihydric alcohol produced as an integral co-product of vegetable oil oleochemical splitting and biodiesel transesterification (predominantly palm oil and palm kernel oil in Southeast Asia). In global commerce, the product divides between industrial crude glycerine (assaying 80%–88% glycerol with residual salts and methanol) and high-purity refined glycerine, which is multi-stage vacuum distilled, bleached, and deodorized to meet strict pharmaceutical and food safety standards: USP, BP, and European Pharmacopoeia (Ph. Eur.) monographs.

Key specification requirements include minimum 99.7% glycerol content, maximum 0.3% water (Karl Fischer), specific gravity at 25°C/25°C of not less than 1.2612, heavy metals strictly below 5 ppm, and complete freedom from diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG) contaminants (<0.10% each), certified by gas chromatography (GC).
