Diethylene Glycol (DEG), Industrial Grade

Industrial DEG for unsaturated polyester resin, gas dehydration and antifreeze, with pharmaceutical diversion screened out

Diethylene glycol is a co-product of ethylene glycol plants, declared under HS 2909.41, and it is bought by industry as a resin monomer, a desiccant and a solvent. Unsaturated polyester resin producers use it as a glycol monomer; gas processors use it in glycol dehydration units to take water vapour out of natural gas; and it goes into antifreeze blends and textile processing. The US reference specification is ASTM D2694, and the producer's certificate of analysis reports purity, water, colour, acidity and the ethylene and triethylene glycol content. DEG has a history that makes screening part of the trade: DEG and ethylene glycol substituted for glycerin or propylene glycol in medicinal syrups killed more than 300 people, mostly children under five, in The Gambia, Indonesia and Uzbekistan in 2022, and WHO issued five medical product alerts between late 2022 and mid-2023. In 2023 the US FDA issued guidance on testing glycerin, propylene glycol, sorbitol and other high-risk drug components for DEG and EG. DEG is sold here as an industrial chemical only, never as or for a pharmaceutical or food excipient. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2909.41 total USD 505 million and about 688,000 MT across 53 reporters: the USA USD 120 million and 155,500 MT, Canada USD 97 million and 148,600 MT, Belgium USD 83 million and 89,400 MT, China USD 34 million, Taiwan USD 21 million and 32,700 MT, India and Thailand USD 15 million each, the Netherlands USD 11 million and Germany USD 10 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is a UPR or polyurethane polyol producer, a gas-processing contractor, a coolant blender, a textile or ink formulator, or a chemical distributor, and every enquiry states the end use and the end user. An enquiry for DEG into cough syrup, oral liquids or any medicine or food is declined, and a buyer asking for DEG labelled as glycerin or propylene glycol is not answered. Bulk parcels move in chemical tankers carried under the IBC Code, with the ship type and pollution category stated on the certificate of fitness; smaller lots move in ISO tanks, 1,000 L IBCs and steel drums, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, with pricing referenced to ICIS, Platts or Argus. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
