Propylene Glycol (MPG): USP/EP Pharma, Food E1520 and Industrial Grade

Monopropylene glycol in USP/EP, food (E1520) and industrial grades, with halal and kosher statements where the producer holds them

Propylene glycol, monopropylene glycol or MPG, is propane-1,2-diol, declared under HS 2905.32, and the grade decides the buyer. USP/EP grade is tested to the United States Pharmacopeia and European Pharmacopoeia monographs for use as a drug excipient; the USP monograph, revised in 2010, limits diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol to no more than 0.10% each by GC-FID, and 2023 FDA guidance tells drug makers to test propylene glycol and other high-risk components for DEG and EG. Food grade is the additive E1520, whose purity criteria are set by Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012; USP/EP material is commonly certified to meet them too. Industrial grade feeds unsaturated polyester resin, coolants and heat-transfer fluids, aircraft and runway de-icing, and functional fluids. Halal and kosher certificates are issued to the producing plant, so they are offered only where that producer holds them. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2905.32 total USD 1.48 billion and about 931,000 MT across 86 reporters: Germany USD 275 million and 192,400 MT, China USD 260 million and 249,300 MT, the USA USD 152 million, Korea USD 149 million and 117,700 MT, Thailand USD 147 million and 108,400 MT, the Netherlands USD 90 million and 70,300 MT, Singapore USD 88 million and 67,100 MT, France USD 73 million, Spain USD 55 million and Belgium USD 31 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is a pharmaceutical or nutraceutical manufacturer, a flavour, food or pet-food producer, a cosmetics and personal-care formulator, a UPR plant, a coolant or de-icer blender, or a distributor, and the grade, the monograph and the certificates are fixed before the price. For USP/EP and food grades, the chain of custody from the producing plant matters as much as the certificate: material comes in the producer's sealed original packs or dedicated tanks, with the producer named on the certificate of analysis, and repacked or unlabelled lots are not offered. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers propylene glycol from producers and their offtake traders in China, the USA, Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Germany and the Netherlands, against the producer's certificate of analysis to the stated monograph, SGS or Intertek inspection at loading for bulk, the safety data sheet, a certificate of origin, halal or kosher certificates where held, and REACH registration confirmation for EU imports. It moves in steel or HDPE drums, 1,000 L IBCs, ISO tanks and chemical-tanker parcels on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, with pricing referenced to ICIS, Platts or Argus. Minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack. Send the grade and monograph, the certificates you need, the pack, the volume and the discharge port.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Propylene Glycol (MPG): USP/EP Pharma, Food E1520 and Industrial Grade — buyer questions

What is the difference between USP, food and industrial propylene glycol?

USP/EP grade is tested to the pharmacopoeia monographs for drug use, including the USP limit of no more than 0.10% each of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. Food grade meets the E1520 purity criteria in Commission Regulation (EU) No 231/2012. Industrial grade is for resins, coolants, de-icing and functional fluids and is not for medicines, food or cosmetics.

Why does chain of custody matter for pharma-grade propylene glycol?

Contaminated or substituted glycols in medicinal syrups caused child deaths in several countries in 2022 and 2023, and 2023 FDA guidance tells drug makers to test propylene glycol for DEG and EG. USP/EP and food grades are therefore offered in the producer's sealed original packs or dedicated tanks, with the producer named on the certificate of analysis.

Can the propylene glycol come with halal or kosher certificates?

Yes, where the producing plant holds them. Halal and kosher certificates are issued to the plant and product, not to a trader, so the offer names the producer and attaches its current certificate from a body the destination accepts.
