Polypropylene (Homopolymer & Copolymer)
PP homopolymer raffia, injection and film grades, impact and random copolymers
Polypropylene is graded on melt flow index at 230 °C/2.16 kg, and the number tells you the process before it tells you the product. Homopolymer raffia grade at MFI 3–4 g/10 min is the largest single application in the buyer markets we serve, drawn into tape for woven cement, fertilizer, rice and sugar sacks and jumbo bags; a raffia line wants a narrow molecular-weight distribution, low fines and consistent MFI lot to lot. Homopolymer injection grades run from MFI 8–12 for housewares and thin-wall packaging up to MFI 20–60 for fast-cycle caps and closures; BOPP film grade sits at MFI 2.5–3.5 with tight isotacticity and low extractables; fibre and non-woven grades run MFI 12–40 with a controlled rheology. Block or impact copolymer (ethylene-propylene rubber phase, MFI 3–30) trades Izod impact of 8–12 kJ/m² and above at room temperature for stiffness, and goes into battery cases, paint pails, crates, automotive and appliance parts; random copolymer (1–4% ethylene, MFI 1–25) gives clarity and a lower melting point for transparent containers, PP-R hot-water pipe and blow-moulded bottles. Density sits at 0.900–0.910 g/cm³ across all of them, melting point at 160–165 °C for homopolymer and 140–150 °C for random copolymer. UN Comtrade 2025 export declarations under HS 3902 put Saudi Arabia at 5.04 million MT at an average USD 1,008/MT, the USA at 2.26 million MT at USD 1,723 (a book weighted to specialty and compounded grades), Thailand at 1.05 million MT at USD 1,124, Malaysia at 0.81 million MT at USD 934, Oman at 0.55 million MT at USD 954, Canada at 0.44 million MT at USD 1,061 and India at 0.34 million MT at USD 1,031. The Gulf and Southeast Asian averages bracket the commodity homopolymer price; the US average does not describe raffia.
The buyer is a woven-sack plant, an injection moulder, a BOPP line, a non-woven plant or a distributor, and it buys a delivered container of one grade against the datasheet of the grade it is running now. Polypropylene moves in 25 kg bags on pallets or 1,250 kg jumbo bags in 40-ft containers at about 24.75 MT each; the chartering desk is not the point here, and container freight is quoted through forwarders against the destination port. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers polypropylene from the offtake traders of Gulf, Southeast Asian, Indian and North American producers, and from trader parcels of prime and near-prime material, against the producer's certificate of analysis with SGS or Intertek inspection at stuffing where the buyer wants it. Parcels run from a single 40-ft container to monthly programmes across grades on FOB, CFR and CIF terms into Mersin and Izmir, Alexandria and Port Said, Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, Karachi, Chittagong and Haiphong. Send the grade you run today, its MFI and whether it is homopolymer, impact or random copolymer, the additive package and the monthly volume, and we will work an origin and a landed number to it.

Polypropylene (Homopolymer & Copolymer) — buyer questions
Which polypropylene grade do I need for woven sacks?
A homopolymer raffia grade at MFI 3–4 g/10 min with a narrow molecular-weight distribution, low gels and a consistent lot-to-lot MFI so the tape line holds draw ratio and denier. Most Gulf and Asian producers publish a dedicated raffia grade; some sack plants run MFI 2.5–3 for higher tenacity tape at a slower line speed. Additives are usually minimal beyond antioxidant; UV-stabilised raffia grades exist for jumbo bags stored outdoors. Tell us the tape denier, line speed and whether you laminate, and we match the grade.
What is the difference between homopolymer, impact copolymer and random copolymer?
Homopolymer is propylene alone: stiffest, highest melting point, cheapest, brittle in the cold. Impact (block) copolymer has a dispersed ethylene-propylene rubber phase that lifts room-temperature and low-temperature impact for pails, crates, battery cases and automotive parts at some cost in stiffness and clarity. Random copolymer has 1–4% ethylene in the chain itself, giving clarity and a lower melting point for transparent containers, PP-R pipe and bottles. They are not interchangeable and the copolymers carry a premium of roughly USD 50–150/MT over commodity homopolymer.
Why does the US export average look so much higher than the Gulf average?
Because HS 3902 covers everything from raffia homopolymer to compounded and specialty copolymers, and the US export book is weighted to the higher-value end. UN Comtrade 2025 export declarations show the USA at USD 1,723/MT against Saudi Arabia at USD 1,008, Thailand at USD 1,124 and Malaysia at USD 934. A converter buying raffia or injection homopolymer should price off the Gulf and Southeast Asian averages; the US figure describes a different mix, not a different price for the same grade.
What parcel sizes and shipping terms do you work?
The unit is the 40-ft container, about 24.75 MT in 25 kg bags on pallets or 1,250 kg jumbo bags; 20-ft containers carry 17–20 MT depending on the route's road weight limits. Programmes run from a single container of one grade to twenty or more a month across grades. Polypropylene is a container cargo, not a bulk-vessel cargo, so our chartering desk is not involved; container freight is quoted through forwarders on CFR and CIF enquiries, or you nominate your own forwarder on FOB. Letters of credit at sight are the usual term for first business, with open terms considered after a track record.
