1509 Basmati Rice

7.60–7.90 mm — the value basmati, first to market

Pusa 1509 is the value line of the basmati trade and the variety that opens the season. Released from IARI in 2013 as an early-maturing selection, it comes off the field in roughly 115–120 days against about 145 for 1121, which means it reaches the market weeks ahead of the main crop and takes materially less irrigation water to grow. Average milled length runs 7.60–7.90 mm, cooking out to around 15–16 mm — clearly short of 1121 but carrying the same aroma family, and contracting on the same sheet: broken ≤ 1% or ≤ 2%, moisture ≤ 13%, variety purity ≥ 95%, ageing 12–18 months with crop year declared. The forms are the familiar four: Golden Sella, White or Creamy Sella, Steam and Raw White.

The case for 1509 is straightforward arithmetic. It prices roughly $200–300/MT below 1121 for rice that smells and tastes like basmati, so wherever the grain is cooked into a dish, mixed with meat and masala, or served rather than displayed, the length premium on 1121 is money spent on something the end customer never sees. That makes 1509 the right buy for mid-market retail at a price point, biryani and pilaf volume programmes, catering and food-service, and any private-label pack competing on shelf price rather than grain length. It is the wrong buy where length is the selling proposition — a windowed premium pack, a gifting line, or a Gulf customer whose QC gauges every lot. The other thing worth knowing is seasonal: because 1509 arrives first, early-season offers are often current-crop and under-aged, and under-aged 1509 cooks sticky exactly as under-aged 1121 does.
