Specialty Synthetic Rubbers: Butyl (IIR), Halobutyl (BIIR / CIIR), EPDM & NBR

Butyl and bromobutyl for inner liners and stoppers, EPDM for seals and roofing, NBR for oil-resistant goods, in bales by the container

Four specialty rubbers share one page because the same compounders buy them and the same numbers define them. Regular butyl (isobutylene-isoprene, IIR) is bought on Mooney viscosity ML 1+8 at 125 °C and unsaturation: producer ranges run Mooney 33-51 MU and unsaturation 1.75-2.25 mol%, and Exxon Butyl 268 is sold at 51 ± 5. Halobutyl adds a halogen so the liner co-cures with the diene rubbers of the tyre casing: bromobutyl grades carry about 1.80 wt% bromine at Mooney 32-46 (Bromobutyl 2222 at 32 ± 5), chlorobutyl about 1.25 wt% chlorine at Mooney 38 (Chlorobutyl 1066 at 38 ± 5), with ash 0.7 wt% and volatiles 1.0 wt% maximum. EPDM (ethylene-propylene-diene) is bought on ethylene content, ENB content and Mooney ML 1+4 at 125 °C; the Keltan range spans 44-71 wt% ethylene, 1.5-11.0 wt% ENB and Mooney 22-92 MU at a density of 0.86-0.88 g/cm³, with Keltan 5470 at 70% ethylene and 4.6% ENB and Keltan 2450 at 48% ethylene and 4.1% ENB as typical general-purpose grades. Nitrile rubber (NBR) is bought on bound acrylonitrile, which sets oil resistance against low-temperature flexibility, and on Mooney ML 1+4 at 100 °C: the Krynac and Perbunan ranges cover 18-48.5 wt% ACN at Mooney 30-120, and Zeon's Nipol series is published from DN401 at 18.0% ACN through 1043 at 29.0%, 1042 at 33.5%, 1041 at 40.5% and DN101 at 42.5%, and Kumho's KNB 35L at 32-36% bound ACN. Grades are named under ASTM D1418 (IIR, BIIR, CIIR, EPDM, NBR).

Halobutyl goes into tubeless tyre inner liners and butyl into inner tubes, curing bladders and pharmaceutical stoppers; EPDM into automotive weatherstrip, radiator and heater hose, single-ply roofing membranes, wire and cable and TPV compounds; NBR into fuel and oil hoses, seals, gaskets, printing rolls, PVC/NBR blends and, as latex, gloves. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations for halobutyl (HS 4002.39) total about USD 1.43 billion and 553,000 MT across 48 reporters: the USA USD 327 million and 129,000 MT, Singapore USD 322 million and 130,000 MT, Belgium USD 233 million and 90,000 MT, China USD 214 million and 100,000 MT, Canada USD 181 million and 44,000 MT, the Netherlands USD 40 million and Japan USD 28 million. India has run anti-dumping cases on NBR since 1996 (Germany and Korea, most recent finding November 2020) and investigated imports from China, the EU and Japan in 2020-21, and had earlier measures on EPDM from the EU, the USA and China; the duty at the port of entry is checked per origin. Synthetic rubber is not a relevant commodity under the EU Deforestation Regulation. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers these four rubbers from producers' distributors and trading houses in Korea, Japan, the USA, Singapore, Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada and China on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, in bales on pallets or in crates to the producer's pack, against the certificate of analysis naming the producing plant and a certificate of origin. Send the grade number you run today, the halogen, ethylene/ENB or ACN window, the Mooney band, monthly volume and destination.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Specialty Synthetic Rubbers: Butyl (IIR), Halobutyl (BIIR / CIIR), EPDM & NBR — buyer questions

What is the difference between butyl and halobutyl?

Halobutyl is butyl with about 1.8 wt% bromine or 1.25 wt% chlorine added. The halogen lets the liner compound co-cure with the natural and diene rubbers of the tyre casing, which regular butyl does not do well, so tubeless inner liners run bromobutyl or chlorobutyl while inner tubes, curing bladders and pharmaceutical stoppers run regular butyl. Both are bought on Mooney ML 1+8 at 125 °C.

Which EPDM numbers matter?

Ethylene content, ENB content and Mooney ML 1+4 at 125 °C, plus oil extension where present. Higher ethylene gives green strength and crystallinity for extruded profiles; higher ENB gives faster sulphur cure; Mooney sets processing. The Keltan range spans 44-71% ethylene, 1.5-11.0% ENB and Mooney 22-92, so a replacement grade is matched on all three against the producer's data sheet.

How do I choose an NBR grade?

By bound acrylonitrile. Higher ACN gives better resistance to fuels and oils but stiffer low-temperature behaviour; lower ACN the reverse. Published series run from about 18% ACN to 48.5%, with medium-high grades around 33-34% the most common for hoses and seals. Mooney ML 1+4 at 100 °C sets processing, and carboxylated and pre-crosslinked variants exist for abrasion and dimensional stability.

Who exports halobutyl rubber?

UN Comtrade 2024 declarations under HS 4002.39 are led by the USA (USD 327 million, 129,000 MT), Singapore (USD 322 million, 130,000 MT), Belgium (USD 233 million), China (USD 214 million), Canada (USD 181 million), the Netherlands and Japan. Most lots move in bales of roughly 34 kg in film, on pallets or in crates, in 20-ft and 40-ft containers.
