Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) & Construction HPMC

Vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) dispersible polymer powder & cellulose ethers for tile adhesives and dry-mix mortars

Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) under HS 3901.90 and Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) under HS 3912.39 represent the indispensable chemical additive pairing that drives modern formulated dry-mix construction mortars. In factory-blended bag products — including cementitious tile adhesives (C1/C2 to EN 12004), external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), self-leveling floor screeds, flexible waterproof slurries, and architectural wall skim coats — plain sand and Portland cement alone cannot deliver the tensile adhesion, flexibility, crack resistance, or open workability times demanded by international building codes.

RDP is produced by spray-drying specialized water-based vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsions in the presence of protective polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) colloids and anti-caking mineral agents. When mixed with water at the job site, the powder instantaneously redisperses back into a liquid polymer emulsion, forming a resilient, flexible polymeric network throughout the hydrated cement crystalline matrix that bridges micro-cracks and multiplies bonding strength to non-porous ceramic and porcelain tiles. HPMC acts as the critical rheological rheology modifier and water-retention agent (≥90% water retention), preventing the fast-acting cementitious binder from losing hydration water prematurely into absorbent brickwork or dry substrate surfaces, thereby eliminating dusting, shrinkage cracks, and debonding failures.

Every dry-mix mortar, tile adhesive, and putty factory in developing markets imports these additives in containerized pallet loads: 1. Standard 25 kg multi-wall paper bags with internal polyethylene moisture liners, packed 40 to 48 bags per shrink-wrapped wooden pallet (1.0 to 1.2 MT per pallet). 2. A standard 20ft dry container carries 10 to 12 pallets (12.0 to 14.4 MT net payload), keeping the cargo safely within weight and volume limits to prevent pallet crushing.

CBIL brokers certified construction-grade RDP (standard flexural, high-flexibility, and hydrophobic waterproof grades) and matching surface-treated construction HPMC (viscosity bands from 40,000 to 200,000 mPa.s) from premier manufacturing facilities in China, Turkey, and Western Europe into regional dry-mix blending plants across the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Offers stand against third-party laboratory verification of solids content, ash content, minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT), viscosity, and water retention. Factory blenders can onboard with a 1-container starter-trial (12 to 14 MT) under CFR and CIF liner terms.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Redispersible Polymer Powder (RDP) & Construction HPMC — buyer questions

What role does RDP play in ceramic tile adhesives?

RDP dramatically enhances tensile adhesion strength (especially after water immersion, heat aging, and freeze-thaw cycles) and imparts flexibility. In modern large-format porcelain tile applications, the cement matrix cannot adhere to the vitrified tile surface; the redispersed polymer film creates the necessary microscopic mechanical and chemical bond.

Why do RDP and HPMC always ship in container loads?

Both additives are high-value, highly sensitive specialty fine chemical powders. They are packaged in multi-wall 25 kg paper bags with internal polyethylene moisture liners. Palletizing and shrink-wrapping them inside 20ft shipping containers prevents moisture ingress, burst bags, and compaction during international sea transport.

Can a customer mix both products in a single container?

Yes. Many regional dry-mix mortar plants prefer a mixed container load (e.g. 10 tonnes of RDP and 2 to 4 tonnes of HPMC in a single 20ft FCL) to match their monthly batch formulation ratios without carrying excessive inventory.
