Modified Starch (Pre-Gelatinised, Oxidised, Cationic, Acetylated and Cross-Linked)

Physically and chemically modified tapioca, corn and potato starches for paper mills and food manufacturers

Modified starch is native starch altered by heat or chemistry so that it behaves the way a production line needs: it thickens without heating, survives freezing and retorting, holds a clear gel, or carries a positive charge that binds to paper fibre. Pre-gelatinised starch is cooked and dried so it swells in cold water; oxidised starch (E1404) is thinned for low viscosity and clear films; acetylated starch (E1420) and acetylated distarch adipate (E1422) resist retrogradation in chilled and frozen foods; hydroxypropyl distarch phosphate (E1442) holds viscosity through acid, heat and shear. In the EU the chemically modified starches E1404, E1410, E1412, E1413, E1414, E1420, E1422, E1440, E1442, E1450, E1451 and E1452 are authorised food additives under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, and EFSA's 2017 re-evaluation found no need for a numerical acceptable daily intake; a food buyer asks for the E-number and its purity specification on the certificate. Cationic starch for the paper machine wet end is bought on degree of substitution, which for paper grades seldom exceeds 0.05, and is dosed at around 10 kg per tonne of paper as a strength and retention aid. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 3505.10, which also carries dextrins, total USD 4.29 billion and 3.25 million MT: Thailand USD 949 million and 1.06 million MT, the Netherlands USD 754 million, Germany USD 511 million, the USA USD 467 million, France USD 338 million, China USD 229 million, Belgium USD 144 million and Italy USD 132 million.

The buyers are two different desks. Paper and board mills buy cationic, oxidised and surface-sizing starches in bulk tonnages; food manufacturers (sauces, dairy desserts, frozen meals, noodles, bakery fillings and meat products) buy E-numbered food starches by function and label. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers modified starches from producers in Thailand, the Netherlands, Germany, the USA, France, China and Belgium against the producer's technical data sheet and certificate of analysis (viscosity, pH, moisture, degree of substitution where relevant, and the additive purity criteria for food grades), with halal, kosher and non-GMO statements where the producer holds them. Product ships in 25 kg bags and jumbo bags in 20-ft and 40-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms; minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack. Send the function, the base starch, the E-number or degree of substitution, the viscosity target and the tonnage, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
