Native Tapioca Starch (Cassava Starch, Food and Industrial Grades)
Food and industrial grade cassava starch from Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia, bought on whiteness, viscosity, pH and SO2
Native tapioca starch is the starch washed out of fresh cassava roots, dried and milled without chemical treatment, and it is bought on a short technical sheet that separates food grade from industrial grade. Published food-grade sheets read moisture 11-14% (ISO 1666), pH 4.5-7, whiteness 90 minimum, Brabender viscosity 700 BU minimum at 6% dry solids, and sulphite (SO2) 10 mg/kg maximum (ISO 5379), with some mills offering food grades at 30 ppm SO2. Industrial-grade sheets allow moisture 13% maximum, whiteness 90% minimum, viscosity 650 BU minimum, pH 5-7 and SO2 up to 30 ppm, with some mills at 100 ppm. SO2 is the sulphite residue, and it is the line on which food and industrial sheets differ most. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 1108.14 total USD 1.79 billion and 3.39 million MT, with Thailand at USD 1.62 billion and 3.16 million MT, then Cambodia, Brazil, the Netherlands, Paraguay, Singapore and Indonesia (USD 11.8 million). Viet Nam did not report 2024 exports to the dataset; its 2023 declaration was USD 1.06 billion and 2.15 million MT, and in the first five months of 2025 it supplied 1.14 million MT, 48.8% of China's 2.35 million MT of cassava starch imports.
The buyers are noodle, snack, bakery and sauce makers, paper mills using starch for surface sizing, textile sizers, adhesive and glucose producers, and importer-distributors in South and Southeast Asia, the Gulf, Africa and Europe. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers native tapioca starch from mills in Thailand, Viet Nam and Indonesia against the mill's certificate of analysis for moisture, whiteness, viscosity, pH, SO2 and microbiology, a health or phytosanitary certificate and a certificate of origin, with halal and kosher certificates where the mill holds them. Starch ships in 25 kg or 50 kg paper or woven PP bags and 850 kg jumbo bags, in 20-ft and 40-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms; minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack. Send the grade, the viscosity and SO2 limits, the pack, the monthly tonnage and the discharge port and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.
Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Native Tapioca Starch (Cassava Starch, Food and Industrial Grades) — buyer questions
What is the difference between food grade and industrial grade tapioca starch?
Food grade carries tighter sulphite limits (10 mg/kg on common sheets, 30 ppm on some) and microbiology, with moisture 11-14%, whiteness 90 minimum and viscosity around 700 BU minimum. Industrial grade for paper, textile and adhesive use allows higher SO2 (30 to 100 ppm by mill) and a slightly lower viscosity floor, around 650 BU.
Which countries export the most tapioca starch?
Thailand declared USD 1.62 billion and 3.16 million MT of HS 1108.14 exports in 2024. Viet Nam declared USD 1.06 billion and 2.15 million MT in 2023 and supplied 48.8% of China's cassava starch imports in the first five months of 2025. Indonesia, Cambodia and Brazil export smaller volumes.
How is tapioca starch packed and shipped?
In 25 kg or 50 kg paper or woven PP bags, or 850 kg jumbo bags, loaded in 20-ft and 40-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR or CIF terms. Minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack with the mill.
