Glyphosate Technical & Formulations (95% TC, 41% IPA Salt SL, 75.7% WDG)

Glyphosate acid technical and IPA-salt and ammonium-salt formulations, compared on acid equivalent and supplied only where registered at destination

Glyphosate is a broad-spectrum, systemic herbicide applied after weeds emerge, with no soil residual activity, and it is sold in three forms that buyers compare on acid equivalent rather than on the weight of salt. The technical material is glyphosate acid, a white dry powder that FAO specification 284/TC (February 2016) sets at no less than 950 g/kg, with formaldehyde at no more than 1.3 g/kg and N-nitrosoglyphosate at no more than 1 mg/kg; the FAO specifications for soluble concentrates (SL) and water-soluble granules (SG) carry the same two limits. Formulators turn the acid into a salt. The common liquid is the 41% isopropylamine (IPA) salt SL, which holds 480 g/L of salt, equal to 360 g/L of glyphosate acid - the most common strength in agriculture. The common dry product is 75.7% ammonium salt granules, sold as SG or WDG, which on the molar masses of the acid (169.07) and the monoammonium salt (186.10) carry about 68.8% acid equivalent. Formulated glyphosate is HS 3808.93. The technical acid is an organo-phosphorus compound: US Customs placed glyphosate technical in heading 2931 in ruling NY N003159, and since HS 2022 the six-digit line for other non-halogenated organo-phosphorus derivatives is 2931.49. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2931.49 total USD 3.45 billion across 62 reporters, led by China at USD 1.88 billion and 635,400 MT and the USA at USD 874 million and 279,600 MT; the subheading also holds other organo-phosphorus chemicals, so it is read as context. Herbicide formulations under HS 3808.93 total USD 14.50 billion, with China at USD 5.22 billion and 2.17 million MT and India at USD 1.55 billion and 172,500 MT. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is a formulator, a registration holder or an importer-distributor, and glyphosate is supplied only where the product is registered at destination. In the EU a plant protection product may not be placed on the market or used unless it is authorised in the Member State concerned (Regulation (EC) No 1107/2009, Article 28), and in the USA an imported pesticide must be registered under FIFRA and declared to the EPA on a Notice of Arrival before the shipment arrives (19 CFR 12.111 and 12.112). National positions differ: the EU renewed glyphosate's approval in November 2023 until 15 December 2033 and prohibited its use as a pre-harvest desiccant; Vietnam banned its use in 2019; Sri Lanka banned its import and use in 2015, re-authorised it for plantations in 2018 and fully revoked the ban in 2022; and Mexico announced a phase-out in 2020 and postponed it in March 2024 without a new date. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers glyphosate technical and formulations from Chinese producers in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui and from Indian herbicide exporters, against the producer's certificate of analysis per batch for acid content, formaldehyde and N-nitrosoglyphosate, the safety data sheet and label in the language and to the registration of the destination, a certificate of origin, and dangerous goods documents where section 14 of the SDS classes the product for transport. Technical ships in 25 kg fibre drums or bags; liquids in 1 L bottles and 5, 10, 20 and 200 L drums; granules in 25 kg bags or 100 g to 1 kg sachets; all on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, priced per MT of technical or per litre or kilogram of formulation. Minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack. Send the form, strength in acid equivalent, pack, label language, registration number and discharge port, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Glyphosate Technical & Formulations (95% TC, 41% IPA Salt SL, 75.7% WDG) — buyer questions

Why are glyphosate offers compared on acid equivalent?

Glyphosate is sold as different salts, and each salt has its own molecular weight, so the percentage on a label is not the amount of herbicide. A 41% IPA salt SL holds 480 g/L of salt, equal to 360 g/L of glyphosate acid, while 75.7% ammonium salt granules carry about 68.8% acid. Offers state grams of acid per litre or per kilogram so two quotes can be compared on the same basis.

What specification does glyphosate 95% TC meet?

The international reference is FAO specification 284/TC (February 2016): glyphosate acid of no less than 950 g/kg, formaldehyde of no more than 1.3 g/kg and N-nitrosoglyphosate of no more than 1 mg/kg. FAO specifications are developed through the FAO/WHO Joint Meeting on Pesticide Specifications (JMPS) for manufacturers whose technical has been evaluated, and extend to others only when the JMPS accepts their material as equivalent, so the producer's batch certificate of analysis is read against both the FAO clauses and the destination registration.

Which HS code applies to glyphosate?

Formulated glyphosate herbicides are HS 3808.93, herbicides put up for retail sale or as preparations. The technical acid is declared in chapter 29 as an organo-phosphorus compound: US Customs ruling NY N003159 placed glyphosate technical in heading 2931, and under HS 2022 the line for other non-halogenated organo-phosphorus derivatives is 2931.49. The national tariff line under the six digits is confirmed by the importer's broker.

Can glyphosate be shipped to any country?

No. It is supplied only where the product is registered and the importer holds any permit the destination requires. The EU approval runs to 15 December 2033 with pre-harvest desiccant use prohibited, Vietnam banned glyphosate use in 2019, and permitted strengths, uses and label text differ from country to country, so the registration number and label are confirmed before a proforma.
