Insecticides: Imidacloprid & Cypermethrin (Technical, SC, WG, EC)

Neonicotinoid and pyrethroid insecticides, technical and formulated, supplied only where registered at destination

Generic insecticides are bought on active content and formulation, and two of the most traded actives now sit under very different rules. Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid with systemic, contact and stomach action, used in sprays, as a seed treatment and in soil or compost; FAO specification 582 (May 2018) sets the technical at no less than 970 g/kg and covers granules, water-dispersible granules, suspension concentrates, oil dispersions, soluble concentrates and seed-treatment suspensions and powders. In the EU, Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/783 limited imidacloprid to uses in permanent greenhouses, with the crop kept inside for its whole life cycle, and the approval then expired on 1 December 2020; clothianidin and thiamethoxam are not approved either. Cypermethrin is a pyrethroid supplied mainly as an emulsifiable concentrate for crops and in topical products for animals, with a minimum purity of 920 g/kg; its EU approval runs to 31 January 2029 as a candidate for substitution. Insecticide formulations are HS 3808.91. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 3808.91 total USD 10.70 billion across 117 reporters; leading reporters include China at USD 2.23 billion and 550,500 MT, the USA at USD 1.59 billion, India at USD 1.40 billion and 158,100 MT, Germany at USD 685 million, France at USD 578 million, Korea at USD 388 million, Japan at USD 358 million and Indonesia at USD 230 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers imidacloprid and cypermethrin from Chinese and Indian producers only for destinations where the product is registered, against the producer's certificate of analysis per batch, the safety data sheet and label in the language and to the registration of the destination, a certificate of origin and dangerous goods documents. Section 14 of the SDS sets the transport entry, for example UN 3352 pyrethroid pesticide, liquid, toxic, in Class 6.1, or UN 3082 and UN 3077 in Class 9 for formulations classed as environmentally hazardous. Technical moves in 25 kg fibre drums or bags, and liquids in 1 L bottles and 5, 10, 20 and 200 L drums, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, priced per MT or litre; minimum orders are confirmed per product and pack. Send the active, formulation, strength, pack, registration number and discharge port, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Insecticides: Imidacloprid & Cypermethrin (Technical, SC, WG, EC) — buyer questions

Is imidacloprid still approved in the EU?

No. Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/783 first limited it to insecticide uses in permanent greenhouses, including seeds treated only for use in permanent greenhouses, and the EU approval expired on 1 December 2020. Other countries register it on their own terms, so each shipment follows the destination's registration and the uses stated on its label.

Can imidacloprid and cypermethrin be shipped to any country?

No. Each is supplied only for destinations where the product is registered: in the EU a plant protection product may not be placed on the market or used unless it is authorised in the Member State concerned, and in the USA an imported pesticide must be registered under FIFRA and declared to the EPA on a Notice of Arrival before the shipment arrives. EU status also differs between the two: cypermethrin is approved to 31 January 2029 as a candidate for substitution, while the imidacloprid approval expired on 1 December 2020. The registration number and label are confirmed before a proforma.

Which specifications apply to imidacloprid technical?

FAO specification 582/TC (May 2018) sets imidacloprid technical at no less than 970 g/kg. FAO also publishes formulation specifications for imidacloprid, including SC, WG, SL and FS, with physical and storage-stability clauses.

How are insecticides shipped?

Under the entry in section 14 of the safety data sheet: pyrethroid formulations can fall under Class 6.1 entries such as UN 3352, and formulations classed as environmentally hazardous under UN 3082 or UN 3077 in Class 9. Technical ships in 25 kg fibre drums or bags and liquids in 1 L bottles to 200 L drums, on FOB, CFR or CIF terms, with the certificate of analysis, SDS, destination label and certificate of origin.
