Shelf-Stable Ready Meals in Retort Pouches (Vegetarian Curries, Dal, Rice Dishes)

Vegetarian curries, dal and rice dishes in 250-300 g retort pouches, commercially sterile, shipped in dry containers

A retort pouch meal is a cooked dish sealed in a flexible multilayer pouch and heat-processed after sealing, like a can, until it is commercially sterile, so it keeps at ambient temperature and is eaten after heating in the pouch or a pan. The vegetarian range carries most of the export trade: dal makhani and other lentil dishes, chickpea and kidney bean curries, mixed vegetable and paneer curries, and ready rice dishes such as vegetable pulao and biryani, in 250-300 g retail pouches, often in a printed carton sleeve. Customs follows the dish: vegetable and pulse curries are declared as prepared vegetables under HS 2005.99, the code US Customs has used for prepared foods from India; rice dishes are commonly declared under HS 1904.90 for prepared cereal products; and other recipes under the residual HS 2106.90. HS 2104.20, homogenised composite food preparations, is limited to finely homogenised preparations put up as infant or dietetic food in containers of no more than 250 g, so it does not fit a curry pouch. Neither 2005.99 (about USD 4.5 billion in 2024 UN Comtrade export declarations, mostly canned vegetables) nor 2106.90 is a ready-meal market size. Low-acid ready meals depend on a validated thermal process: in the USA a low-acid food in a retort pouch is a low-acid canned food, the manufacturer holds a Food Canning Establishment registration and files a scheduled process for each product, and processing follows 21 CFR 113. Shelf life is set by the manufacturer from its process and pouch and stated on the proforma.

The buyer is an importer-distributor of South Asian foods, a supermarket private-label desk, a defence or civil-defence ration buyer, a humanitarian procurement agency, an outdoor and expedition retailer or an airline and rail caterer, and the offer is a price per carton for a stated recipe, pouch weight and count. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers vegetarian retort pouch meals from manufacturers in India and Thailand, in the manufacturer's brand or the buyer's private label, against the origin authority's health certificate, the manufacturer's certificate of analysis with commercial sterility and incubation results per batch, a certificate of origin and a halal certificate covering the fats, emulsifiers and flavourings. EU labels emphasise the Annex II allergens under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 - milk in paneer, butter and cream curries, and mustard, celery or nuts where used. A shelf-stable composite product with dairy entering the EU falls under Delegated Regulation (EU) 2022/2292 and its dairy ingredient must meet the treatment and origin conditions set there; a meal with no animal products is not a composite product. Gulf labels follow GSO 9 with Arabic text, SFDA registration applies for Saudi Arabia, and US importers verify the manufacturer under the FSMA Foreign Supplier Verification Program in addition to the FDA canning filings. Cartons need no reefer and move palletised or floor-loaded in 20-ft or 40-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms; minimum runs are confirmed per product and pack. Send the recipes, pouch weight, count, label and discharge port and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
