Whole fuzzy cottonseed for oil mills and dairy rations

Cottonseed is the by-product of ginning: the seed left once the lint is taken off, still carrying short fibres called fuzz. An oil mill delints it, dehulls it and presses or solvent-extracts the kernel. The US National Cottonseed Products Association puts the output of a ton of seed at about 16% crude oil, 45% meal, 27% hulls and 8% linters by weight. The meal is a protein feed, the hulls a roughage, and the linters go into cellulose, paper and pulp. Whole fuzzy cottonseed is also fed straight to dairy cows as a combined source of energy, protein and fibre.

Cottonseed contains gossypol, a pigment that is toxic to non-ruminants. Cattle tolerate it far better, which is why whole seed goes to dairy rations, while meal for poultry and pigs is limited or processed. The EU sets a free-gossypol maximum for cottonseed feed materials under Directive 2002/32/EC, so an EU feed buyer asks for a free gossypol figure on the certificate of analysis.

In 2024 (UN Comtrade, HS 1207.29, partner World) Australia exported 610,000 MT worth USD 246 million, the United States 249,000 MT, Greece 175,000 MT, Kazakhstan 69,000 MT, Brazil 36,000 MT and Azerbaijan 35,000 MT. Benin reported USD 21 million of exports without a declared weight. The West African cotton belt, including Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso and Benin, gins its own crop and crushes much of the seed locally, so export volumes swing with mill demand.
