Rapeseed / Canola

Low-erucic rapeseed and canola, 40–44% oil, Danube and Black Sea origin

CBIL brokers low-erucic rapeseed — canola in the Canadian and Australian trades, double-zero or 00 rapeseed in Europe — the seed that crushes into food-grade rapeseed oil and a 34–36% protein meal, and that the biodiesel industry in Europe competes for on the same tonnes. The contract is written on oil content at 40–44% on an as-received basis with a premium and discount scale either side of a 40% or 42% base, moisture at 8–9% maximum, admixture at 2% maximum and, the number that defines the grade, erucic acid below 2% of the oil, with glucosinolates below 25 micromoles per gram of meal so the meal can go into feed at a full inclusion rate. High-erucic industrial rapeseed is a different seed for a different contract and is not what a food crusher wants delivered. FFA on the extracted oil, damaged and green seed count and chlorophyll follow, because green immature seed carries chlorophyll into the crude oil and the refiner pays to take it out.

The desk works this seed from the Danube — Constanța, Izmail and Galați — into Mediterranean crushers in Handysize and coaster parcels, alongside Canadian and Australian canola in Panamax lots into Europe and Asia, and Ukrainian, Romanian and Bulgarian seed moving through the Black Sea; excluded origins are not offered. Romania alone declared 2.44 million MT of HS 1205 exports in 2025, 32% of it to Belgium and 20% to the Netherlands, with Germany, the United Kingdom and Pakistan behind them, at unit values of USD 560–590 per MT (UN Comtrade, 2025 export declarations). Rapeseed heats and self-oxidises if loaded above 9% moisture or with green seed above 2%, so a hold survey and a load-port moisture certificate are part of the specification, not an add-on. Every lot ships against SGS or Intertek certification of oil content, moisture, admixture, erucic acid, glucosinolates and FFA, with GMO status declared where the destination requires it, in bulk vessel parcels and container-load 50 kg bags, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms.

Rapeseed / Canola — buyer questions

Is rapeseed the same as canola?

Commercially, yes, provided both are low-erucic. Canola is the Canadian name for rapeseed bred to below 2% erucic acid and below 30 micromoles of glucosinolates, and European 00 rapeseed is the same specification under a different name. What is not the same is high-erucic industrial rapeseed, which fails a food crusher's contract outright — so contract on the erucic figure, not the word.

How does the oil-content scale work?

The contract names a base, typically 40% or 42% oil on an as-received basis, and applies a premium above it and a discount below it, usually pro rata with a bonus multiplier on the premium side. Independent analysis at load or discharge sets the figure. Buy against the base your press actually yields at, and ask for the scale in writing before you price the seed.

What Danube parcel sizes are workable?

Coasters and small Handysizes of 3,000–15,000 MT from Constanța, Izmail and Galați into Mediterranean crushers, with draught at the river ports setting the practical ceiling. Larger Black Sea lots load at Constanța's deep-water berths. Tell us the discharge port and the crusher's intake pattern and we will size the stem to the freight rather than the other way round.

Why does moisture matter so much on rapeseed?

Because the seed is small, oily and packs tight, so a hold loaded above 9% moisture or with too much green seed heats, sprouts and turns the oil rancid before arrival. Insist on a load-port moisture and admixture certificate and a hold survey, and hold the seller to 8% where the voyage is long or the destination is warm.
