Jet A-1 Aviation Fuel

Aviation turbine fuel to DEF STAN 91-091 / ASTM D1655

Jet A-1 is the most tightly documented product in the oil trade, because a contaminated batch grounds aircraft. The specification is the joint AFQRJOS checklist, which combines DEF STAN 91-091 and ASTM D1655 into the most restrictive of each: flash point 38 °C minimum, freezing point minus 47 °C maximum, density 775–840 kg/m³ at 15 °C, sulphur 0.30% maximum with mercaptans capped, aromatics 25% maximum, smoke point, thermal stability (JFTOT), existent gum, water separation (MSEP), electrical conductivity with static dissipator additive, and a list of approved additives. The number that governs the trade is not on that list: it is the chain of custody. Jet fuel moves only in dedicated or properly cleaned tanks and lines, with a refinery certificate of quality, a certificate of analysis at every custody transfer, and a recertification test on arrival, and a cargo that has lost its documented chain is downgraded to gasoil regardless of what the laboratory finds.

Buy Jet A-1 as a cargo when you operate or supply an airport fuel farm, are a national oil company or a licensed into-plane supplier, and have segregated, filtered storage that meets JIG or equivalent standards. Parcels run from about 5,000 MT for island and regional airports to 30,000–40,000 MT for hubs, priced against the published jet assessment for the loading region, and freight is on tankers with acceptable last cargoes. We work one way: a named refinery or terminal, a stated quantity and laycan, an independent inspector at load with a full AFQRJOS test, and payment against documents under a documentary letter of credit. CBIL brokers Jet A-1 from Gulf, Mediterranean, Indian and Far East refineries on FOB, CFR and CIF terms into airports and fuel farms with the storage to receive it.

Jet A-1 Aviation Fuel — buyer questions

What documentation travels with a Jet A-1 cargo?

The refinery certificate of quality against the full AFQRJOS checklist, an independent certificate of analysis at load, tank and line cleanliness and last-cargo records, certificates at each custody transfer, and a recertification test on arrival before release. Break the chain anywhere and the product is no longer jet fuel, whatever a later test says. This is why jet cargoes cost more to move than the product price alone suggests.

Can any tanker carry jet fuel?

No. Tanks must be dedicated to jet or have an acceptable last-cargo history (clean products only, with jet, kerosene or gasoline preferred), be cleaned and inspected, and be free of copper, zinc and other metals that harm thermal stability. Vessel acceptance is agreed before pricing, because a cargo loaded into an unapproved tanker is downgraded on arrival.

What storage does the buyer need?

Segregated, epoxy-lined tanks with filtration, water draining and settling time, operated to JIG or an equivalent airport fuel standard, and a laboratory or contract to recertify on arrival. Without that a jet cargo cannot be received as jet. If you are building a fuel farm, tell us the stage you are at and we will time the supply accordingly.

How is jet fuel priced and paid?

As a differential to the published jet assessment for the loading region over an agreed pricing window, paid under a documentary letter of credit against shipping documents. We do not work offers without a named refinery or terminal, and the seller's title to the cargo is established before any price is quoted. Airport fuel is not a product for the paper market.
