Kerosene (SK & DPK)

Dual-purpose kerosene and household / illuminating kerosene cargoes

Kerosene is sold in two commercial forms. Dual-purpose kerosene (DPK), the name used in Nigeria and much of West Africa, is a kerosene cut made to a quality that serves both household use and, where the chain of custody allows, aviation; household or illuminating kerosene, often called SK (superior kerosene) in South Asia, is the cooking and lighting fuel sold by marketers and retailers. The contract numbers are flash point, at 38 °C minimum in ASTM D3699, sulphur, where D3699 sets 0.04% by weight for grade 1-K and 0.30% for grade 2-K, and smoke point, which measures how cleanly the fuel burns in a wick lamp or stove and is set by the destination's national standard. Density, distillation, colour and water complete the certificate. Kerosene sold as DPK is not Jet A-1: aviation use needs the full AFQRJOS test and a documented chain of custody, covered on our Jet A-1 page.

Buy kerosene as a cargo when you are a licensed importer or marketer with tank capacity. Tanzania's household kerosene is almost entirely imported, and Nigeria is a large household kerosene market. Cargoes move in MR product tankers under MARPOL Annex I and are priced as a differential to the published jet/kerosene assessment for the loading region (Platts or Argus). We work one way: the producing refinery named on the certificate of quality, SGS or Intertek at load, a named buyer, and payment against shipping documents under a documentary letter of credit; no deals on tank-storage receipts, dip tests or advance-fee procedures. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
