Canned beans are cooked, shelled pulses sealed in a can with brine or sauce and retorted, and the buyer compares offers on the drained weight, not the net weight printed on the front. The customs code follows the species: beans of the genera Vigna and Phaseolus - red kidney, white and navy beans, and the navy beans in baked beans in tomato sauce - are HS 2005.51 when shelled, while chickpeas and fava beans (Vicia faba, the bean in Egyptian-style ful medames) fall outside those genera and are declared under the residual HS 2005.99 with other prepared vegetables. The retail can is the 400 g can, often with an easy-open end, and foodservice buys the A10 can or 2.5 kg packs for hummus, salad bars and catering kitchens. Each pack is a low-acid food: it is processed in a retort to commercial sterility, the condition in which the can holds no microorganisms able to grow under normal storage, including spores of Clostridium botulinum, and the best-before date is set by the cannery and stated on the proforma. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2005.51 total USD 882 million and about 753,000 MT across 98 reporters: Italy USD 355 million and 334,600 MT, China USD 105 million and 112,300 MT, the Netherlands USD 59 million, the UK USD 41 million, Spain USD 37 million and 33,400 MT, the USA USD 30 million, Mexico USD 30 million, New Zealand USD 28 million, Canada USD 24 million, France and Belgium USD 21 million each and Hungary USD 21 million. HS 2005.59, the other beans, adds USD 393 million, led by Italy at USD 76 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is an importer-distributor, a wholesaler, a supermarket chain's private-label desk or a hummus and ready-meal maker in the Gulf, North Africa, West Africa, Europe or South Asia, and the offer is a price per carton for a stated bean, medium, can and drained weight. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers canned chickpeas and beans from canneries in Italy, China, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Hungary, Türkiye, Egypt and the USA, in the cannery's brand or the buyer's private label, against the origin authority's health certificate, the cannery's certificate of analysis for drained weight, vacuum and seam checks, a certificate of origin and a halal certificate from a body the destination accepts. EU-bound cans are checked against Regulation (EU) 2023/915, which caps inorganic tin in canned food other than beverages at 200 mg/kg and lead in pulses at 0.20 mg/kg; Gulf-bound labels follow GSO 9, with Arabic or Arabic/English text and production and expiry dates; and for the USA the cannery must be registered as a food canning establishment with its scheduled process filed with the FDA under 21 CFR 108, 113 and 114. Linings are specified BPA-NI because Regulation (EU) 2024/3190 bans bisphenol A in food-contact coatings, with a transition for single-use packaging of preserved fruit, vegetables and fish to 20 January 2028. Cartons of retail or catering cans move palletised or floor-loaded in 20-ft or 40-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms; minimum runs are confirmed per product and pack. Send the bean, medium, can size, drained weight, label and discharge port and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
