Most exported guar never reaches food. APEDA reports that around 90% of India's guar gum exports are used to extract oil and shale gas, where the gum thickens the water-based fracturing fluid so that it carries sand into the fractures, and the United States is the largest consumer of industrial guar for hydraulic fracturing, which ties Rajasthan's crop price to North American drilling activity. India exported 474,519 MT of guar gum worth USD 550 million in FY25, with Germany, the USA, Norway and China among the leading destinations. Industrial grades are sold on viscosity of a 1% solution, published from 3,500-4,000 cps up to 7,500-8,000 cps, mesh of 100, 200 or 300, and moisture typically below 12%. Oilfield buyers add hydration rate, because the gel has to build in the blender on the move. Derivatives extend the range: hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) and carboxymethyl hydroxypropyl guar (CMHPG) are made from guar splits, and CMHPG is preferred where hydration, pH tolerance and temperature stability matter, with published work reporting 90-95% hydration and viscosity within 10-15 minutes and stability at 120-180 °C in crosslinked fluids. Hydroxyethyl and hydroxypropyl guar gum from India were classified by US Customs in 2009 under HTS 1302.32.0020 with guar gum itself, so the customs code is confirmed per derivative and destination rather than assumed to move to chapter 39.
UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 1302.32, which also holds locust bean gum, total USD 946 million, with India at USD 417 million and 239,900 MT and Pakistan at USD 40 million and 23,900 MT. The buyer is an oilfield chemical and pumping services supplier, a textile printing or paper chemical maker, a mining or explosives producer or an industrial distributor. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers industrial guar gum and guar derivatives from processors in India and Pakistan against the processor's certificate of analysis for viscosity at stated time and method, hydration, mesh, moisture and pH, a safety data sheet and a technical data sheet, and a certificate of origin. Bags move palletised in 20-ft dry containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, priced per MT on grade; NCDEX guar seed and guar gum futures are read as a reference only, not as a price basis. Send the grade or derivative, viscosity and hydration requirement, mesh, volume and discharge port, and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.
Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
