Folding Boxboard, Coated Duplex Board & SBS (GC1, GC2, GD2, GZ)

Coated folding boxboard, grey-back duplex and solid bleached board in reels and sheets for folding cartons

Cartonboard is the printed board of folding cartons for food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and consumer goods, and the grade names follow DIN 19303. Folding boxboard (FBB, GC1 with a white back, GC2 with a cream back) is a multi-ply board with mechanical pulp in the middle between chemical pulp layers and a pigment coating on top. Coated duplex board (GD) has a white coated top and a grey back of recycled fibre. Solid bleached board (SBS, GZ) is made of bleached chemical pulp throughout and pigment coated on top and often the back. For customs, coated multi-ply board other than kraft and graphic grades is HS 4810.92, which is where FBB and duplex are usually declared, while coated kraft board bleached uniformly through the mass with more than 95% chemical wood fibre and over 150 g/m² is HS 4810.32, the usual line for SBS; the importer's broker confirms the line for each grade. The buyer's specification states grammage, caliper, ISO brightness (ISO 2470), Cobb (ISO 535), moisture, and for sheets the size and grain direction. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 4810.92 total USD 10.55 billion and about 11.5 million MT across the reporters in the pull: Sweden USD 3.00 billion, Finland USD 1.80 billion, China USD 1.73 billion and 2.18 million MT, Germany USD 740 million, then Chile, Canada, the Netherlands and the Republic of Korea; Indonesia declared USD 180 million and 358,000 MT and India USD 163 million and 327,000 MT. Under HS 4810.32 China declared USD 388 million and the USA USD 334 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is a folding carton converter, a printer-converter or a board merchant in the Middle East, Africa, South and Southeast Asia or Latin America, and the offer is a price per metric tonne for a stated grade, grammage, format and packing. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers FBB, duplex and SBS from mills in Sweden, Finland, China, Indonesia, India, Germany and the USA, against the mill's certificate of quality per lot, packing lists with reel or pallet numbers, a certificate of origin, FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody certificates where the carton is sold as certified, and food-contact declarations where the board touches food. Board is chapter 48 paper, in scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation from 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators. Reels, or sheets on wrapped pallets, ship in 40-ft containers on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Send the grade, grammage, reels or sheet size, tonnage and discharge port and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Folding Boxboard, Coated Duplex Board & SBS (GC1, GC2, GD2, GZ) — buyer questions

What is the difference between FBB, duplex and SBS?

Folding boxboard (GC1, GC2) is multi-ply with mechanical pulp between chemical pulp layers and a coated top. Duplex board (GD) has a white coated top and a grey back of recycled fibre. SBS (GZ) is bleached chemical pulp throughout. The grade names come from DIN 19303.

Which HS code applies to duplex board and SBS?

Coated multi-ply board other than kraft and graphic grades, including most FBB and duplex, is HS 4810.92. Coated kraft board bleached uniformly throughout with more than 95% chemical wood fibre and weighing over 150 g/m² is HS 4810.32, which usually covers SBS. The importer's broker confirms the national line.

Which countries export the most coated board?

UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 4810.92 put Sweden first at USD 3.00 billion, then Finland at USD 1.80 billion and China at USD 1.73 billion with the largest tonnage. Indonesia and India each declared around USD 160-180 million.

Reels or sheets?

Converters with sheeters buy reels, while many printers buy sheets cut to size with a stated grain direction, packed on wrapped pallets. Both ship in 40-ft containers and the format is stated on the offer.
