Kraftliner (Unbleached Brown & White-Top, Virgin Fibre)

Virgin-fibre brown and white-top kraftliner in reels, bought on grammage, burst, RCT and SCT

Kraftliner is the outer facing of strong corrugated boxes, and the customs definition sets the floor of the grade: under the Harmonized System subheading notes, kraftliner is machine-finished or machine-glazed paper and paperboard in rolls, weighing more than 115 g/m², in which not less than 80% of the fibre is wood fibre from the chemical sulphate or soda process, with a minimum Mullen burst that rises with the weight. Unbleached brown kraftliner is HS 4804.11 and the other kraftliner, mainly white-top with a bleached surface ply for printed boxes, is HS 4804.19. A corrugator buys it on grammage and on the strength figures on the mill certificate: bursting strength to ISO 2759, ring crush (RCT) to ISO 12192, short-span compression (SCT) to ISO 9895 in the cross direction, which predicts how the box stacks, and water absorption as Cobb to ISO 535, the grams of water per m² the surface takes up in the test time. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 4804.11 total USD 4.80 billion and about 7.6 million MT across the reporters in the pull: the USA USD 2.34 billion and 3.86 million MT, Sweden USD 546 million and 962,000 MT, Finland USD 311 million, Poland USD 309 million, Austria USD 263 million and Brazil USD 189 million and 341,000 MT. Under HS 4804.19 the total is USD 1.69 billion, led by Sweden at USD 577 million, Canada at USD 303 million and the USA at USD 210 million. Those are declared export values, not offers.

The buyer is a corrugated box plant or sheet feeder, a converter of heavy-duty and fruit boxes, or a paper merchant in South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America or Europe, and the offer is a price per metric tonne for a stated grade, grammage, reel width and diameter. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers kraftliner from mills in the USA, Sweden, Finland, Austria and Brazil to converters, against the mill's certificate of quality for each lot, packing lists with reel numbers and weights, a certificate of origin and, where the buyer claims it on the box, an FSC or PEFC chain-of-custody certificate from the mill and each trader in the chain. Paper and paperboard under chapter 48 are in scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation, which applies to large and medium operators from 30 December 2026, so EU-bound lots carry the mill's due diligence statement reference. Reels ship on end or on the roll in 40-ft containers, or as breakbulk from the large North American and Nordic mills, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. European contract prices are commonly referenced to the Fastmarkets FOEX PIX Packaging Europe indices, which include brown and white-top kraftliner, and US prices to the Fastmarkets RISI linerboard assessments in Pulp & Paper Week. Send the grade, grammage, reel width, diameter and core, tonnage and discharge port and the enquiry is screened and worked against it.

Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Kraftliner (Unbleached Brown & White-Top, Virgin Fibre) — buyer questions

What is the difference between kraftliner and testliner?

Kraftliner is made mainly from virgin fibre: the HS definition requires at least 80% sulphate or soda wood fibre. Testliner is made wholly or mainly from recovered paper and falls under HS 4805.24 or 4805.25. Kraftliner carries higher strength per gram and holds it better in humid conditions, which is why fruit and heavy-duty boxes use it.

Which tests appear on a kraftliner mill certificate?

Grammage, moisture, burst to ISO 2759, ring crush to ISO 12192, short-span compression to ISO 9895 and Cobb water absorption to ISO 535. The buyer's specification states the minimums and the contract states how a lot that misses them is settled.

How are kraftliner prices referenced?

European contracts often refer to the Fastmarkets FOEX PIX Packaging Europe indices, which cover brown and white-top kraftliner, and US contracts to the Fastmarkets RISI linerboard assessments in Pulp & Paper Week. Export offers are priced per metric tonne on FOB, CFR or CIF terms.

Does EUDR apply to kraftliner?

Yes. Paper and paperboard under chapter 48 are in scope of the EU Deforestation Regulation, which applies to large and medium operators from 30 December 2026 and to micro and small operators from 30 June 2027. EU-bound lots need the operator's due diligence statement, with the geolocation of the wood behind the pulp.
