Magnesium ingot is bought on purity, impurity limits and packing that keeps the metal dry. Unwrought magnesium containing at least 99.8% Mg falls under HS 8104.11; other unwrought magnesium, including alloys, under 8104.19. Iron, nickel, copper and silicon are the elements buyers watch, because they drive corrosion in magnesium alloys and contaminate aluminium melts, so limits go into the contract and the certificate of analysis is checked by independent sampling. Magnesium has no LME contract; it is priced as a negotiated price per MT. Supply is concentrated: USGS reports world primary magnesium metal production of 1,080,000 MT in 2024, of which China produced 953,000 MT. The trade data show the same picture. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 8104.11 sum to USD 901 million across the reporting countries, with China at USD 702 million (265,964 MT), followed by Türkiye (USD 39 million) and Brazil; under 8104.19 they sum to USD 492 million, with China at USD 290 million, the UK (USD 42 million), Korea (USD 41 million) and Czechia (USD 35 million).
Destination rules matter. The United States keeps an anti-dumping duty order on pure magnesium from China: in the 2022–2023 administrative review the China-wide cash deposit rate was 111.73%, and that review has since been amended after court proceedings, so Chinese-origin metal is rarely a practical US offer. Buyers elsewhere are aluminium alloy makers, steel plants using magnesium for desulphurisation, ductile iron foundries, die-casters, and titanium and chemical producers in the Gulf, South Asia, Southeast Asia, East Africa and Turkiye. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and works producer and trader parcels against the certificate of analysis, certificate of origin, packing list and bill of lading, with independent weighing and sampling at stuffing. Ingot moves in strapped, wrapped bundles in 20-foot container lots on FOB, CFR and CIF terms, with the dangerous-goods declaration the carrier requires. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

What is the difference between 99.8% and 99.9% magnesium?
Impurity headroom. Both classify as HS 8104.11 when magnesium is at least 99.8%; 99.9% metal leaves less room for iron, nickel and copper, which aluminium alloy makers and die-casters watch closely. Put the impurity limits in the contract rather than relying on the headline purity.
Where does magnesium ingot come from?
Mostly China. USGS reports that China produced 953,000 MT of the 1,080,000 MT of world primary magnesium metal in 2024, and China accounted for most 2024 export value under HS 8104.11 in UN Comtrade data. Smaller export flows are reported from Türkiye, Brazil, Korea and Czechia.
Can Chinese magnesium be shipped to the United States?
It faces a US anti-dumping duty order on pure magnesium. In the 2022–2023 administrative review the China-wide cash deposit rate was 111.73%, with a separate rate for one respondent. Check the current rate with a US customs broker before contracting.
What documents and inspection come with a magnesium shipment?
The producer's certificate of analysis, a certificate of origin, the packing list, the bill of lading and the carrier's dangerous-goods paperwork. Independent weighing and sampling at stuffing is advised on first shipments.
