Thai White Rice 5% Broken

The FOB Bangkok benchmark grade, from Thai exporter-millers

Thai white rice 5% broken (HS 1006.30) is the reference grade of the non-aromatic rice trade: when a market report says the Thai price moved, it means this grade, FOB Bangkok. Thailand exported about 7.9 million tonnes of rice in 2025 by the Commerce Ministry's count and 8.3 million tonnes by customs declaration, worth USD 4.7 billion, with South Africa and Iraq at about one million tonnes each, the United States at 0.86 million tonnes (mostly Hom Mali at about USD 985 per tonne) and China at 0.65 million tonnes. White rice was 3.62 million tonnes of the 2025 total, down 40 per cent on 2024 as India's return to the market took the price-sensitive African and Asian buyers. The exporters' association targets 7.5 million tonnes for 2026, of which 3.5 million tonnes white rice, and the ministry 7.0 million tonnes; both call it a five-year low, on a strong baht and a global surplus.

The 2026 price has moved in a band: Thai 5% broken was USD 408 to 429 per tonne FOB in May, USD 483 at the June peak, USD 440 to 450 in August and about USD 410 by the autumn, against Vietnam at USD 420 to 430, Pakistan near 395 and India near 350. That premium of USD 40 to 60 over the next origin is what a buyer pays for the Thai grading standard, the milling consistency and the ports, and it is the reason tenders that name Thai origin do so. The Thai standard for white rice 5% is set by the Ministry of Commerce: long grain, brokens 5% maximum, whole kernels 60% minimum, red and undermilled kernels, chalky kernels, damaged and yellow kernels and foreign matter each capped, moisture 14% maximum, with the Department of Foreign Trade's inspection certificate issued by a licensed surveyor before shipment. CBIL brokers Thai white rice 5% broken from exporter-millers registered with the Thai Rice Exporters Association against that certificate, SGS or Intertek sampling at stuffing, fumigation and phytosanitary certificates to the destination's rules, in 25 kg and 50 kg PP bags by the 20 ft container (about 24 t) and in bulk or breakbulk from Bangkok and Laem Chabang for programme volumes. A Thai offer that does not name the mill, the crop year and the Thai standard it is graded to is not a Thai offer.

Thai White Rice 5% Broken — buyer questions

Why is Thai 5% broken the benchmark?

Because it is graded to a published national standard, milled consistently by a few dozen large exporters, and shipped from two deep ports, so a buyer in Durban or Basra knows what will arrive. Market reports quote the Thai price first for that reason, and other origins are priced as a discount to it.

What is the premium over Vietnam, India and Pakistan?

Through 2026 Thai 5% broken has sat USD 20 to 60 per tonne above Vietnam and USD 60 to 130 above India. The gap is the grading standard, the milling and the baht. Buyers who need a named Thai origin in a tender pay it; buyers who need a 5% broken long grain at the lowest landed cost usually do not.

What does a proper Thai offer carry?

The mill or exporter's name, the Thai Standard grade, the crop year, the packing, the load port and laycan, and the Department of Foreign Trade inspection route. A Thai offer sent from a third country without a mill named behind it is not worked.

How much ships in a container?

About 24 to 25 tonnes in a 20 ft container in 50 kg bags, slightly less in retail packs. Programme volumes of 10,000 tonnes and more move breakbulk or bulk from Bangkok's river terminals and Laem Chabang.
