Vietnam White Rice 5% Broken and Fragrant Rice

Mekong Delta long grain, white and fragrant, at the Asian price point

Vietnam exports about seven million tonnes of rice a year from the Mekong Delta, where two and sometimes three crops a year keep supply continuous, and in 2026 it is the origin that sits between Thailand and India on price. Shipments were 6.4 million tonnes in January to September 2026, down 6 per cent on the year, at an average export value of USD 485 per tonne; the Philippines, China, Indonesia, Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire are the large buyers. Vietnamese 5% broken was quoted at USD 360 to 370 per tonne FOB early in 2026, USD 415 to 420 in June and USD 420 to 430 at the start of October, against Thai 5% at USD 410 to 450 and Indian at about USD 350. Vietnamese fragrant rice at 5% broken was quoted at USD 490 to 495, which is the grade behind the retail jasmine-type packs sold across Asia and Africa at a fraction of the Thai Hom Mali price.

The varieties matter more than in Thailand because they are not one standard. OM 5451 and IR 50404 are the white-rice workhorses; DT8 (Dai Thom 8), Jasmine 85 and OM 18 are the soft fragrant grades the Philippines and China take; ST24 and ST25 are the premium fragrant grades, ST25 having won the world's best rice award in 2019 and 2023, and they are sold by name in retail packs. A Vietnamese offer therefore states the variety, the crop (winter-spring is the large, best-quality crop harvested from February to April; summer-autumn follows from June), and the standard, which is the national standard for milled rice at 5% broken, moisture 14 per cent maximum, with the exporter's own specification for chalky, damaged and red kernels. CBIL brokers Vietnamese white and fragrant rice from exporters licensed under the government's rice-export decree, which requires the exporter to own milling and storage, with SGS, Intertek or Vinacontrol sampling at stuffing, fumigation and phytosanitary certificates, in 25 and 50 kg PP bags by the container and in bulk from Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho and My Thoi. Containers load about 25 tonnes; programme volumes move breakbulk.

Vietnam White Rice 5% Broken and Fragrant Rice — buyer questions

How does Vietnamese rice compare with Thai on price?

Through 2026 Vietnamese 5% broken has been USD 20 to 60 per tonne below Thai 5% and USD 60 to 80 above Indian. Vietnamese fragrant rice at about USD 490 is the grade that undercuts Thai Hom Mali by more than USD 600 for a jasmine-type grain, which is why it has taken retail share across Asia and Africa.

Which variety should a buyer ask for?

For plain long grain, OM 5451 or IR 50404 at 5% broken. For a soft fragrant grain at a price point, DT8, Jasmine 85 or OM 18. For a premium pack sold by name, ST25 or ST24. The variety and the crop are on the offer, because they change the cooking quality more than the broken percentage does.

Who is allowed to export rice from Vietnam?

Companies licensed under the government decree on rice export business, which requires the exporter to own or lease milling and storage of a set capacity and to register contracts with the food association. A Vietnamese offer from an unlicensed party is not a Vietnamese offer.

When are the crops?

Winter-spring, harvested February to April, is the largest and best; summer-autumn from June to August; and an autumn-winter crop in parts of the delta. Prices are usually softest at the winter-spring harvest and firmest before it.
