Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP)
Spray-dried SMP by heat class, low, medium and high heat, regular or instant
Skimmed milk powder is bought on composition first and on heat treatment second. The Codex standard for milk powders (CXS 207-1999) sets the floor: milkfat 1.5% maximum, water 5% maximum and milk protein at least 34% of the milk solids-non-fat, so a protein figure quoted on the powder as sold has to be read back to the solids-non-fat basis before two offers are compared. The US ADPI Nonfat Dry Milk standard (v3.0, 2023) is the grading reference most contracts borrow: Extra Grade spray-dried powder at 1.25% fat, 4.0% moisture, 0.15% titratable acidity, 1.2 ml solubility index and 15.0 mg scorched particles per 25 g maximum, 10,000 cfu/g standard plate count and 10 cfu/g coliforms maximum, with Salmonella, Listeria and coagulase-positive Staphylococcus not detected; Standard Grade widens those to 1.50% fat, 5.0% moisture, 0.17% acidity and 50,000 cfu/g. Heat class is set by the whey protein nitrogen index (WPNI): low heat at 6.00 mg/g or more for recombined fluid milk and cheese, medium heat at 1.51-5.99 mg/g for recombined yoghurt and ice cream, and high heat at 1.50 mg/g or less for bakery, where undenatured whey protein depresses loaf volume. Buyers also state regular or instant (agglomerated, lecithinated for cold-water dispersion), and write antibiotic residues and melamine testing into the certificate of analysis; the Codex contaminants standard (CXS 193-1995) caps melamine in food at 2.5 mg/kg. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 0402.10 (milk powder at 1.5% fat or less) total USD 8.24 billion from 108 reporters: the USA at 745,000 MT and an average USD 2,742/MT, New Zealand at 441,000 MT at USD 2,754, Germany at 266,000 MT at USD 2,761, France at 238,000 MT at USD 2,834, Australia at 170,000 MT at USD 3,265, Ireland at 152,000 MT, the Netherlands at 150,000 MT and Poland at 135,000 MT at USD 2,785, with Belgium reporting USD 474 million by value only.
The buyer is a recombining plant making reconstituted milk, yoghurt, evaporated or condensed milk; a bakery or biscuit maker buying high heat; a chocolate or confectionery plant; or a distributor selling 25 kg bags on to all of them. Comtrade 2024 import declarations show where it goes: China at 229,000 MT, Algeria at 208,000 MT, Mexico at 204,000 MT, Indonesia at 201,000 MT, the Philippines at 173,000 MT and Egypt at 86,000 MT. Feed-grade and denatured SMP for calf milk replacer is a separate product with a separate certificate and is never mixed into a food-grade lot. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers food-grade SMP from dairy co-operatives, processors and dairy-ingredient traders in Oceania, the European Union, the USA and South America, against the producer's certificate of analysis and independent inspection at stuffing where the buyer wants it. SMP moves in 25 kg multiwall kraft bags with a polyethylene inner liner, about 18-24 MT to a 20-ft container depending on bag count and whether the load is palletised, with a shelf life stated by the producer, typically up to 24 months stored cool and dry. The documents are set by the destination: a veterinary or dairy health certificate from the origin authority, a halal certificate from a certifier the importing country accepts, a certificate of origin, and the importer's own import permit or registration where the destination requires one. Freight is container freight quoted through the lines and forwarders on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Send the heat class, grade, regular or instant, the monthly volume and the destination port.
Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Skimmed Milk Powder (SMP) — buyer questions
Which heat class of skimmed milk powder do I need?
It follows what you make. Low heat powder (WPNI 6.00 mg/g or more) has most of its whey protein undenatured and suits recombined fluid milk, cheese and cultured products where flavour and rennet coagulation matter. Medium heat (1.51-5.99 mg/g) is the general recombining powder for yoghurt, ice cream and many beverages. High heat (1.50 mg/g or less) is the bakery and confectionery powder: denaturing the whey protein stops it weakening dough and depressing loaf volume, and a heat-stable high heat grade is used for recombined evaporated milk that is retorted. Ask for the WPNI figure on the certificate of analysis, not just the class name.
What is the difference between Extra Grade and Standard Grade?
They are grading tiers in the ADPI Nonfat Dry Milk standard. Extra Grade spray-dried powder is held to 1.25% fat, 4.0% moisture, 0.15% titratable acidity, 1.2 ml solubility index, 15.0 mg scorched particles per 25 g and 10,000 cfu/g plate count; Standard Grade allows 1.50% fat, 5.0% moisture, 0.17% acidity, 2.0 ml solubility index, 22.5 mg scorched particles and 50,000 cfu/g. European and Oceania producers publish their own specifications against Codex CXS 207-1999 rather than ADPI grades, so a contract should list the limits themselves rather than a grade name alone.
Is skimmed milk powder the same as nonfat dry milk?
Nearly, but not by definition. Nonfat dry milk is the US term under US regulations; skimmed milk powder is the Codex and international term, with a minimum milk protein of 34% on solids-non-fat. US producers make SMP to the Codex protein standard for export where a buyer specifies it, and some destinations' import rules or tenders name one or the other. Both are declared under HS 0402.10.
What documents does a shipment of SMP need?
A producer's certificate of analysis, a veterinary or dairy health certificate issued by the origin's competent authority in the format the destination requires, a certificate of origin, and in most Middle East, North African and Southeast Asian destinations a halal certificate from a certifier the importing country accepts. Many destinations also require the importer to hold an import permit or registration, and some require the producing plant to be listed with the destination authority. These are confirmed per destination before a contract is fixed, not after the container sails.
