Avocado Oil: Extra Virgin & Refined

Cold-pressed extra virgin and refined avocado oil for food, cosmetic and pharma use

Avocado oil is pressed from the flesh of the fruit, not the seed, and it trades in two distinct products. Extra virgin (cold-pressed) avocado oil is mechanically extracted at low temperature from ripe fruit, keeps its green colour and buttery, grassy flavour, and is bought by retail and premium food brands on flavour and freshness. Refined avocado oil is bleached and deodorised to a pale, neutral oil with a high smoke point, used for frying, mayonnaise, dressings and as a clean-label cosmetic base. Both are oleic-dominant oils, which is what gives avocado oil its stability and its label appeal. Contracts are written on free acidity and peroxide value (much tighter for refined oil than for cold-pressed oil under the Codex Standard for Named Vegetable Oils, CXS 210), moisture and impurities, colour and fatty-acid composition. Codex added avocado oil to CXS 210 after the 28th Committee on Fats and Oils in February 2024 forwarded it for adoption, with a total sterol range of 3,000 to 7,500 mg/kg and beta-sitosterol of 79.0 to 93.4% of sterols. Those sterol figures matter commercially: a University of California, Davis study published in Food Control found at least 82% of 22 avocado oil samples on the US market were oxidised before their date or mixed with other oils, so a sterol and fatty-acid test is the buyer's protection.

There is no customs code for avocado oil alone. It is declared under HS 1515.90 with other fixed vegetable oils, so trade statistics overstate it. UN Comtrade shows USD 2.7 billion of HS 1515.90 exports in 2024; Mexico led at USD 379 million, and Kenya exported USD 86 million, much of it avocado oil. Peru, South Africa, Chile, New Zealand and the Dominican Republic appear with smaller values, while Spain's and other European figures include re-export and other oils. Mexico is the volume origin for refined and extra virgin oil, Peru a smaller one, Kenya is a growing source of crude and refined oil processed from fruit that misses fresh export grade, and New Zealand and Chile supply premium cold-pressed oil. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers avocado oil in 24 MT flexitanks, 1,000 L IBCs, 190 kg drums and bottled retail formats, with a certificate of analysis covering acidity, peroxide, fatty-acid and sterol profile, certificate of origin and food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical grade documents as the end use requires (organic certificates where the lot is certified), on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Tell us the grade, end use and pack, and we will work supply against your specification.

Avocado Oil: Extra Virgin & Refined — buyer questions

Extra virgin or refined avocado oil: which should I buy?

Buy extra virgin (cold-pressed) when the oil is the product: retail bottles, finishing oil, premium dressings where the green colour and flavour are the point. Buy refined when the oil is an ingredient or a frying medium: it is pale, neutral, has a higher smoke point and a longer shelf life, and it is the grade most cosmetic formulators want. Refined oil also has tighter acidity and peroxide limits under Codex CXS 210, so it is easier to hold to specification.

How do I protect myself against adulterated avocado oil?

Specify and test the fatty-acid profile and sterol composition, not just acidity and peroxide. Codex CXS 210 now sets a total sterol range of 3,000 to 7,500 mg/kg and beta-sitosterol of 79.0 to 93.4% for avocado oil, which exposes blending with cheaper seed oils. A UC Davis study found at least 82% of 22 US market samples were oxidised or mixed with other oils. Take a sealed sample at loading, have it tested by an independent accredited laboratory, and keep a counter-sample.

Why is HS 1515.90 trade data a poor guide to avocado oil volumes?

Because the code covers every fixed vegetable oil without its own heading, including sesame and several specialty oils, so the headline figure (USD 2.7 billion of exports in 2024 per UN Comtrade) is far larger than the avocado oil trade. Country lines are more telling where avocado oil dominates, such as Mexico and Kenya, but no official figure isolates avocado oil alone.

Can you supply cosmetic or pharmaceutical grade avocado oil?

Yes, as refined avocado oil documented for that use: a certificate of analysis to the buyer's monograph or specification, and the cosmetic or pharmaceutical documentation your regulator requires. Tell us the monograph, the tests you need on the certificate and the pack (drum, IBC or smaller), because pharmaceutical buyers usually need tighter documentation than food buyers, not a different oil.
