Rapeseed & Canola Oil: Crude Degummed, Refined & High-Erucic

Rapeseed oil and canola oil are one oil when the erucic acid is low, and that figure decides the customs code, the food-law limit and the contract. The Codex Standard for Named Vegetable Oils (CXS 210) gives canola oil as another name for low erucic acid rapeseed oil, produced from low-erucic varieties of Brassica napus, Brassica campestris and Brassica juncea, with erucic acid (C22:1) from not detected to 2.0% of total fatty acids, oleic acid at 51.0–70.0%, linoleic acid at 15.0–30.0%, alpha-linolenic acid at 5.0–14.0%, an iodine value of 105–126 and a saponification value of 182–193 mg KOH/g. In customs terms, low erucic acid rape or colza oil is oil with less than 2% erucic acid by weight: HS 1514.11 when crude and HS 1514.19 when refined. The rest of heading 1514, including high-erucic rapeseed oil and mustard oil, is HS 1514.91 crude or HS 1514.99 other. High-erucic rapeseed oil carries roughly 43–53% erucic acid and is an industrial oil: the erucic acid is converted into erucamide, used as an anti-adhesive agent, lubricant and plasticiser, and into behenic acid and nylon raw materials. In North America crude canola oil trades under the Canadian Oilseed Processors Association (COPA) rules in three types. Crude super degummed (Type I) and crude degummed (Type II) oil both run at 1.0% FFA as oleic max, 0.3% moisture, volatile matter and impurities max and 30 ppm chlorophyll max, with phosphorus capped at 50 ppm for Type I and 200 ppm for Type II; crude oil (Type III) is allowed 2.0% FFA and 0.5% moisture and impurities, and all three are held to 2.0% erucic acid. Under the same rules, refined and specialty oils trade on the specification agreed between buyer and seller, and Codex sets the ceilings for refined oils at an acid value of 0.6 mg KOH/g and a peroxide value of 10 meq/kg, against 4.0 mg KOH/g and 15 meq/kg for cold-pressed oil. The Canola Council of Canada puts canola oil at 7% saturated fat.
UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations put crude low-erucic oil under HS 1514.11 at USD 3.96 billion across 53 reporters: Canada USD 1.56 billion and 1.47 million MT, Germany USD 581 million, France USD 473 million, Ukraine USD 227 million and 258,000 MT, the Netherlands USD 149 million, Czechia USD 144 million, Australia USD 130 million and Poland USD 125 million. Refined low-erucic oil under HS 1514.19 added USD 5.23 billion across 68 reporters, led by Canada at USD 2.74 billion and 2.04 million MT, Germany at USD 756 million, the Netherlands at USD 242 million, Belgium at USD 231 million and Australia at USD 110 million, and the other rape, colza and mustard oils under HS 1514.91 and 1514.99 came to USD 484 million and USD 151 million, led by Belgium, the Netherlands, Canada, France and Germany. Those are declared export values, not offers. Canada exported 3.22 million MT of canola oil in 2025, about 77% of it to the United States, according to the Canola Council of Canada. China imposed a 100% tariff on Canadian canola oil and meal from 20 March 2025, the outcome of an anti-discrimination investigation that is separate from its anti-dumping case on canola seed; in 2026 the meal tariff was set to 0% from 1 March to 31 December and the seed anti-dumping duty was finalised at 5.9%, while canola oil stayed at 100%. For the EU, Regulation (EU) 2019/1870 caps erucic acid at 20 g/kg in vegetable oils and fats sold to consumers or used as food ingredients and at 50 g/kg in camelina, mustard seed and borage oil, and food produced from genetically modified rapeseed is labelled as such unless the GM presence is adventitious or technically unavoidable and no more than 0.9%. Canola is grown in both GM and non-GM varieties, so the contract states which. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers rapeseed and canola oil from crushers and refiners in Canada, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Czechia, Australia and Ukraine (government-controlled ports), on FOSFA 53 FOB or FOSFA 54 CIF terms, or under the COPA rules for North American business. Bulk vegetable oils move in chemical tankers under MARPOL Annex II, container lots in flexitanks and ISO tanks, and packed oil in drums and retail formats. Each lot carries an SGS or Intertek certificate at loading for FFA, moisture and impurities, phosphorus, chlorophyll, erucic acid and fatty-acid profile, a certificate of origin, and the GM and halal documents the destination requires. Prices are per MT on grade and pack, with the FOB Rotterdam rapeseed oil price series published by the World Bank and the IMF, Euronext rapeseed futures in euros per tonne and ICE canola futures in Canadian dollars per tonne as reference points. Is canola oil the same as rapeseed oil?
When the erucic acid is low, yes. Codex CXS 210 gives canola oil as a name for low erucic acid rapeseed oil, with erucic acid from not detected to 2.0% of fatty acids, and customs treats rape or colza oil with less than 2% erucic acid by weight as low-erucic: HS 1514.11 crude, 1514.19 refined. High-erucic rapeseed oil, at roughly 43–53% erucic acid, is a different oil for industrial uses such as erucamide and is declared under HS 1514.91 or 1514.99.
What is the difference between crude super degummed, crude degummed and refined canola oil?
Phosphorus and processing. Under the COPA trading rules, crude super degummed (Type I) and crude degummed (Type II) canola oil both carry 1.0% FFA max, 0.3% moisture, volatile matter and impurities max and 30 ppm chlorophyll max, but phosphorus is capped at 50 ppm for Type I and 200 ppm for Type II. Crude oil goes to a refinery or a biodiesel plant. Refined, bleached and deodorised oil is bought for food on the specification agreed in the contract, and Codex sets 0.6 mg KOH/g acid value and 10 meq/kg peroxide value as the ceilings for refined oils.
Can Canadian canola oil be shipped to China?
It can, but it pays China's 100% tariff. China imposed that tariff on Canadian canola oil and meal from 20 March 2025 after an anti-discrimination investigation. In 2026 the meal tariff was set to 0% from 1 March to 31 December and the anti-dumping duty on canola seed was finalised at 5.9%, but canola oil stayed at 100%, according to the Canola Council of Canada. The origin is settled before a Chinese enquiry is priced.
What does an EU buyer need on erucic acid and GM status?
Regulation (EU) 2019/1870 caps erucic acid at 20 g/kg in vegetable oils and fats placed on the market for consumers or as food ingredients, with 50 g/kg allowed for camelina, mustard seed and borage oil and 35 g/kg for mustard as a condiment. Food produced from genetically modified rapeseed must be labelled as such unless the GM presence is adventitious or technically unavoidable and no more than 0.9%. Canola is grown in GM and non-GM varieties, so the certificate states erucic acid and the contract states the GM status.
How is rapeseed and canola oil priced and contracted?
Per MT on grade, pack and delivery terms. The reference points are the FOB Rotterdam rapeseed oil price series published by the World Bank and the IMF, Euronext rapeseed futures quoted in euros per tonne and ICE canola futures quoted in Canadian dollars per tonne. The contract form is FOSFA 53 for FOB business, FOSFA 54 for CIF, or the COPA trading rules for North American sales.
