RBD Palm Oil, Palm Stearin & Palm Kernel Oil

RBD palm oil, palm stearin and crude or RBD palm kernel oil to PORAM specification

RBD palm oil is crude palm oil that has been refined, bleached and deodorised but not fractionated, so it keeps the whole fatty-acid profile. PORAM specifies FFA as palmitic at 0.10% max, moisture and impurities at 0.10% max, iodine value 50–55, melting point 33–39 °C and colour 3 red max in a 5¼-inch Lovibond cell. It is semi-solid at a temperate ambient and goes into shortening, vanaspati, bakery fats and frying where a harder fat is wanted. Fractionation splits it into liquid olein, which has its own page, and solid stearin. PORAM's RBD palm stearin runs FFA 0.20% max, M&I 0.15% max, iodine value 48 max, melting point 44 °C min and colour 3 red max. The buyer's sheet usually narrows that range. A margarine hardstock or soap plant names a slip melting point and IV band, and a hard stearin sits at an IV in the low 30s with a slip melting point in the low 50s °C. Palm kernel oil comes from the kernel and is a different oil: a lauric fat, like coconut oil. Crude palm kernel oil is bought at 5% FFA max as lauric. PORAM's RBD palm kernel oil runs 0.1% FFA max, 0.1% M&I max and IV 19 max, and goes into soap noodles, fatty alcohols, confectionery fats and creamers.

Malaysia exported 10.81 million MT under HS 1511.90, refined palm oil and its fractions, in 2024 (UN Comtrade). In palm kernel oil, Malaysia exported 0.31 million MT of crude oil under HS 1513.21, and under HS 1513.29 Indonesia exported 1.31 million MT and Malaysia 0.45 million MT. In bulk, refined palm oils and stearin are MARPOL Annex II Category Y cargoes for IMO Type 2 tankers, carried heated so they stay pumpable. Stearin needs the most heat, so smaller lots ship as flakes in 25 kg bags or as stearin in flexitanks fitted with heating pads. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers these grades from Malaysian and Indonesian refineries on FOSFA 81 or PORAM terms, FOB, CFR or CIF, priced on a basis against the palm screen. Lots move with SGS or Intertek certification, a certificate of origin and Halal documentation, plus RSPO, MSPO or ISPO chain-of-custody certificates and EU Deforestation Regulation data where the destination requires them. Send the grade, IV and melting point band, pack and discharge port.

RBD Palm Oil, Palm Stearin & Palm Kernel Oil — buyer questions

What is the difference between RBD palm oil, olein and stearin?

RBD palm oil is the whole refined oil, semi-solid at a temperate ambient, with a melting point of 33–39 °C. Fractionation cools it and separates the liquid part, olein, from the solid part, stearin. Stearin has the lower iodine value and the higher melting point, 44 °C min under PORAM. Olein is the frying and bottling oil; stearin goes into hardstock and soap.

Which stearin do I need for soap or margarine?

Specify it by slip melting point and iodine value, not by name. PORAM only sets an IV of 48 max and a melting point of 44 °C min, so both a hard stearin and a soft stearin can meet it. Give your IV band and slip melting point range, and the refinery is worked to that band.

Why palm kernel oil instead of palm oil?

Palm kernel oil is a lauric oil. Its lauric (C12) fatty acids give lather in soap, the right chain length for fatty alcohols and surfactants, and a sharp melt in confectionery fats. Palm oil cannot do those jobs. Crude palm kernel oil goes to oleochemical splitters and soap makers; RBD palm kernel oil goes to food and cosmetic users.

How does stearin ship without setting solid?

In bulk it moves heated in IMO Type 2 tankers as a MARPOL Annex II Category Y cargo, with the heating instructions set in the contract. Container lots ship as flakes in 25 kg bags, or as stearin in a flexitank fitted with a heating pad so it can be melted out at discharge.
