Olive Oil: Extra Virgin, Virgin, Refined & Pomace
Bulk extra virgin, virgin, olive oil blends & pomace oil to IOC and EU grade
Olive oil is the one edible oil where the grade name is a legal category, not a marketing word, and CBIL is a commodity brokerage company that brokers it against that category. The International Olive Council trade standard (COI/T.15/NC No 3) and, for oil sold in the EU, Regulation (EU) 2022/2104 define the ladder. Extra virgin is mechanically extracted, has free acidity of at most 0.8% as oleic and a peroxide value of at most 20 meq O2/kg, passes the UV absorbance limits (K232, K270 and delta-K) that expose oxidation and refined-oil addition, and must show zero median defect and some fruitiness before an accredited tasting panel. Virgin olive oil is allowed slightly higher acidity and minor sensory defects. Lampante is a virgin oil that fails both: it is not fit for direct consumption and exists to be refined. Refined olive oil is that lampante after neutralising and deodorising, and the grade sold simply as "olive oil" is a blend of refined and virgin olive oils. Olive-pomace oil (HS 1510) is solvent-extracted from the pulp and stone left after pressing, refined, and blended with virgin oil; it must never be sold as olive oil. Waxes and alkyl esters are the tests that separate pomace and poor-quality oil from genuine virgin grades, so they belong in the contract.
The trade is concentrated. UN Comtrade reports about USD 15.3 billion of HS 1509 exports in 2024, with Spain (USD 6.3 billion, some 758,000 t), Italy (USD 3.2 billion), Portugal (USD 1.6 billion), Tunisia (USD 1.6 billion) and Greece (USD 1.0 billion) well ahead of Türkiye, Argentina, Chile and Morocco; HS 1510 pomace oil added about USD 0.9 billion, again led by Spain and Italy. Italy's exports include substantial re-export of Spanish, Greek and Tunisian bulk oil, which is why origin on the label and origin on the paperwork must agree. Buyers take bulk extra virgin for bottling under their own brand, refined and blended olive oil for food service and manufacturing, and pomace oil for frying where the price gap matters. Prices move with the Spanish harvest more than with any other oil market, so a contract should state crop year, acidity, peroxide and panel result with a sampling date. Supply is arranged in 24 MT flexitanks, ISO tanks, 1,000 L IBCs, 5 L tins and PET or glass bottles for private label, with a certificate of analysis from an IOC-recognised laboratory, a panel test report, certificate of origin and phytosanitary or health documents per destination, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Send the grade, the chemical and sensory limits you buy to, and the pack, and we will work supply against them.

Olive Oil: Extra Virgin, Virgin, Refined & Pomace — buyer questions
How do I know bulk extra virgin olive oil is genuinely extra virgin?
Buy it on the full IOC or EU test set, not on acidity alone. Acidity and peroxide can look fine on a deodorised or blended oil; K232, K270 and delta-K expose oxidation and refined-oil addition, waxes and alkyl esters expose pomace and poor fruit, fatty-acid and sterol composition expose seed-oil blending, and only an accredited panel test confirms zero defects. Ask for a certificate of analysis and panel report from an IOC-recognised laboratory on a sample drawn at loading and sealed, and keep a counter-sample.
What is the difference between olive oil, refined olive oil and olive-pomace oil?
Refined olive oil is virgin oil that failed consumption grade (usually lampante) and was chemically refined. The product labelled simply as olive oil is a blend of that refined oil with some virgin oil for flavour and colour. Olive-pomace oil is solvent-extracted from the pressed pulp and stones, refined and blended with virgin oil; it is a separate HS heading (1510) and cannot legally be sold as olive oil. Each is cheaper than the one before it, and each suits frying and manufacturing better than retail extra virgin.
Why do olive oil prices swing so much from year to year?
Supply is concentrated in a few Mediterranean origins and Spain alone carries a large share of world exports (about USD 6.3 billion of the USD 15.3 billion HS 1509 trade in 2024, per UN Comtrade). A drought or heat at flowering in Andalusia moves the whole market, and olive trees bear unevenly between years. That is why a contract should name the crop year and why quotes are short-validity compared with seed oils.
Can olive oil be supplied under our own brand?
Yes. Private label is arranged through bottlers at origin in PET, glass or 5 L tins, or you can take bulk in flexitanks, ISO tanks or IBCs and pack yourself. Labelling of grade, origin and blends is regulated in the EU and many other markets, so the label artwork should be checked against the destination rules and the origin on the certificate before bottling starts.
