Copra Meal (Coconut Expeller & Extraction)
Philippine and Indonesian copra meal by protein, oil, fibre and aflatoxin
Copra meal is what remains when dried coconut kernel (copra) is pressed or extracted for coconut oil, and it is bought as a mid-protein, high-fibre ruminant ingredient with a useful residual fat. Feedipedia's compilation puts crude protein at 20–25% on dry matter with cell-wall constituents above 50% NDF and about 30% ADF; mechanically pressed copra expeller (the common Philippine and Indonesian product) keeps 8–12% oil, while the less common solvent-extracted copra meal runs 2–4% oil and slightly more protein by difference. The sheet reads protein, oil, crude fibre (12–16%), moisture (≤ 12%), ash, sand and silica, and above all aflatoxin B1, because copra that was sun-dried for two or three days instead of the four or five it needs moulds in the sack and on the ship: the FAO case study on Southeast Asian copra records very high average aflatoxin levels in farmer-dried copra, and the EU cut its aflatoxin B1 limit on copra by-products to 20 µg/kg in the early 1990s, a level that stands today as the 0.02 mg/kg feed-material limit of Directive 2002/32/EC. Mills that buy kiln-dried copra and store expeller under cover certify the lot below that; the contract should name the limit and the surveyor. UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2306.50 show the Philippines at 382,000 MT at an average USD 163/MT and Indonesia at 193,000 MT at USD 167/MT, with Sri Lanka a distant third at 5,000 MT; the two together are the world copra meal trade. The United Coconut Association of the Philippines reports January–September 2024 copra meal exports of 263,940 MT, and for September 2024 the buyers were South Korea (12,500 MT, 37.3%), China (10,700 MT, 31.9%) and India (10,350 MT, 30.8%); USDA's PSD table puts Korea's copra meal imports at 180,000 MT in 2022/23.
The buyer is a Korean or Vietnamese dairy and beef feed mill, a Chinese ruminant compounder or an Indian dairy cooperative buying copra meal as a cheap fibre-and-fat ingredient at 10–25% inclusion in cattle rations, and the question is the aflatoxin certificate and the delivered price against palm kernel expeller, which it competes with directly. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers copra expeller and copra meal from Philippine and Indonesian coconut-oil mills and trader positions against SGS or Intertek certification of protein, oil, fibre, moisture, ash, sand and silica and aflatoxin B1 at the load port, with free fatty acid and salmonella on request. Parcels are structured as Handysize bulk out of General Santos, Davao, Iligan and Bitung on FOB and CFR terms, often as combination cargoes with PKE into the same discharge port, and in 20-foot containers in 50 kg bags or bulk-loaded with liners for Indian and Vietnamese mills taking 500–2,000 MT a month; because CBIL also runs a chartering desk (LaycanDesk), the freight leg can be quoted with the cargo. Send your aflatoxin ceiling, protein and oil bands, tonnage and discharge port and we will work the mill to it.
Need the ship as well? Our chartering desk prices bulk feed ingredient freight on LaycanDesk.
Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.

Copra Meal (Coconut Expeller & Extraction) — buyer questions
Why is aflatoxin the first question on copra meal?
Because copra is dried on farms, often in the sun, and needs four or five clear days to reach a safe moisture; farmers who stop at two or three ship copra that moulds, and the aflatoxin concentrates in the cake after the oil is pressed out. The FAO case study on Southeast Asian copra found very high average levels in sun-dried copra, and the EU's aflatoxin B1 limit for feed materials is 0.02 mg/kg under Directive 2002/32/EC. Buy from mills that source kiln-dried copra and store expeller under cover, name the limit and the surveyor in the contract, and sample at the load port.
Copra expeller or solvent-extracted copra meal?
Almost all Philippine and Indonesian tonnage is expeller, pressed mechanically and keeping 8–12% oil (Feedipedia), which is energy the cow uses; solvent-extracted meal at 2–4% oil is rarer and slightly higher in protein by difference. Specify which you are formulating for, because the oil figure changes the energy value, the price and the storage life — higher-oil cake goes rancid faster in a hot container.
Who exports copra meal and who buys it?
UN Comtrade 2024 export declarations under HS 2306.50: the Philippines 382,000 MT at USD 163/MT and Indonesia 193,000 MT at USD 167/MT. The United Coconut Association of the Philippines reports 263,940 MT exported in January–September 2024 and, for September 2024, buyers of South Korea 37.3%, China 31.9% and India 30.8%. USDA's PSD table puts Korea's copra meal imports at 180,000 MT in 2022/23. Vietnam and Indian dairy cooperatives take container lots.
What parcel sizes and freight terms do you work?
Handysize 15–30,000 MT out of General Santos, Davao, Iligan and Bitung on FOB and CFR terms, often combined with palm kernel expeller into the same Korean or Vietnamese discharge port; 20-foot containers in 50 kg bags or bulk-loaded with liners for Indian and Vietnamese mills taking 500–2,000 MT a month. Because CBIL also runs a chartering desk, the bulk freight can be quoted with the cargo.
