Animal Licking Salt Blocks

Natural mineral licks, 1–5 kg, roped or drilled

Licking blocks are an agricultural input and they are bought on weight, presentation and hardness rather than on the appearance that drives the retail grades. Standard sizes run 1, 2, 3 and 5 kg with larger blocks for cattle sheds, supplied plain, centre-drilled for a hanger, or fitted with a rope for stable and paddock use. The single most important physical property is hardness: a block that crumbles is consumed in days and wastes the farmer's money, while properly selected natural rock erodes slowly under licking and lasts a season. That is why natural quarried block is preferred over pressed and bonded alternatives in this segment — there is no binder to fail, and no compression process to get wrong. Chemistry sits around 97–98% sodium chloride with the natural mineral traces that make the product attractive to livestock in the first place.

Buy natural licking block where the animals are the customer: cattle and dairy operations, equestrian yards and stables, sheep and goat farming, and retail feed and pet distribution. The commercial logic differs sharply from the edible and décor grades — nobody is paying for colour uniformity or dimensional tolerance, but hardness, consistent weight and honest packaging matter, and the price point is low enough that freight efficiency drives the deal. What this grade is not is a food-grade product: it is not washed, screened or certified for human consumption, and it should never be routed into a food programme on price. Equally, décor offcuts should not be sold as licks — livestock consume this material and the mineral and heavy-metal profile needs to be right for the species. CBIL supplies against weight tolerance, hardness selection and NaCl verification, loose in bulk, in cartons, or in printed retail packs for feed distribution, on FOB Karachi and Port Qasim, CFR and CIF terms.

Animal Licking Salt Blocks — buyer questions

Why natural block rather than pressed licks?

Because there is no binder to fail and no compression step to get wrong. Natural quarried rock erodes slowly and evenly under licking, so a block lasts. Pressed and bonded products can crumble or soften, and a lick consumed in days is a cost the farmer notices immediately. Hardness is the property to select on in this segment.

Roped, drilled or plain?

Match it to how the animal reaches it. Roped blocks hang in stables and paddocks and suit equestrian use. Centre-drilled blocks mount on a holder or bar in a shed. Plain blocks go in a trough or on the ground for cattle, sheep and goats. Retail feed distribution usually wants roped or drilled because they present better on a shelf.

Can I use edible-grade salt for animal licks to simplify sourcing?

You can, but you would be paying for washing, screening and food certification that the animals do not need, on a product where price is the deciding factor. It runs the wrong way too — do not route lick or décor material into a food programme. Keep the grades separate; they are priced and certified differently for good reason.

What tolerance applies to block weight?

± 5% is the workable standard for natural quarried block. These are cut from rock rather than moulded, so exact weights are not achievable and a supplier promising them is either pressing the product or about to disappoint you. Contract on nominal weight with a stated tolerance and check it on a sample at load.
