Natural Rock Salt (White)

Mined white halite — industrial, de-icing & food grades

White rock salt is the commodity end of the salt trade, and it is bought on three numbers and one logistics question. The numbers are sodium chloride content — 97–98% for de-icing and general industrial use, 99%+ for water softening, chlor-alkali feed and food grades — moisture, which matters more here than in pink salt because a damp cargo cakes in bulk and blocks a spreader, and particle size, nominated as a screened cut: crushed 5–15 mm for road spreading and licks, granular 1–5 mm for water softeners and industrial dissolving, and fine or milled below 1 mm for food processing and hide curing. Water-insoluble matter (clay and shale from the seam) is the quality complaint that actually arrives, so it is specified and tested rather than assumed. The logistics question is the one that decides the price: rock salt is a low-value, high-weight material, so the distance from mine to load port, and whether it moves in bulk or in bags, count for more than the assay.

Buy white rock salt rather than a pink grade when nobody sees the crystal: highway and municipal de-icing programmes, water-treatment and softener salt, chemical feedstock, hide and skin curing, animal feed formulation, and industrial food processing where a food-grade certificate is needed but colour is not. Türkiye's Çankırı mine and the white seams of the Pakistani salt range both supply this market by container and by bulk vessel, and the choice between them is usually a freight decision. CBIL supplies against independent verification of NaCl, moisture, insolubles and particle size at load port, with heavy-metal testing on food-grade lots, in bulk, 25 kg and 50 kg PP bags or 1 MT jumbo bags, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms.

Natural Rock Salt (White) — buyer questions

What NaCl content do I actually need?

Work back from the use. De-icing and general industrial salt is fine at 97–98%; the road does not care about the last point of purity. Water softeners, chlor-alkali feed and food processing want 99% and above, because the balance is insolubles and other minerals that foul a resin bed, a cell or a product. Paying for 99.5% to spread on a road is money wasted; buying 97% for a softener is a resin bed ruined.

Bulk or bags?

Bulk for anything above a few thousand tonnes going to a port with a covered stockpile — it is far cheaper per tonne. Bags when the buyer has no bulk handling, when the cargo moves inland by truck, or when moisture in transit would cake the load. Jumbo bags are the usual compromise for container shipments; 25 kg bags are for distribution rather than for import.

Why does moisture matter so much for rock salt?

Because damp salt cakes. A bulk cargo that picks up moisture in the hold arrives as slabs that will not flow through a hopper or a spreader, and a bagged lot that was loaded wet sets solid in the bag. Specify moisture, insist on dry covered storage at the load port, and for de-icing programmes consider an anti-caking treatment, which is standard for highway salt.

Is Turkish or Pakistani origin better?

The seams are comparable; the freight is not. Çankırı serves the Black Sea, Mediterranean and Europe with short sea legs; the Pakistani white seams serve the Gulf, East Africa and South Asia from Karachi. Price the delivered cost to your port rather than the FOB number — for a material worth tens of dollars a tonne, the ocean leg is usually the larger part of what you pay.
