Aluminium 6xxx Swarf & Turnings (ISRI Teens / Telic)

Segregated 6061, 6063 and 6082 machining swarf, loose, dried or briquetted, priced on tested melt recovery

Turnings are the lowest-priced form of clean wrought aluminium scrap, and the discount is a measure of what is lost in the furnace. Machining swarf from 6061, 6063 and 6082 bar, plate and extrusion has a large surface for its weight and arrives carrying cutting fluid: loose chips hold 10 to 15% coolant, briquettes 1 to 5%. Charged wet and loose, chips lose about 17% of their metal to oxide; dried and submerged properly, about 5%, and every 1% of cutting fluid adds roughly 2% to dross. That is why the trade writes two grades. ISRI Teens is segregated borings and turnings of one specified alloy, free of oxidation, dirt, free iron, stainless steel, magnesium, oil, flammable liquids and moisture, with fines through a 20-mesh screen limited to 3%. ISRI Telic is mixed borings and turnings of two or more alloys, sold on stated maxima for zinc, tin and magnesium, with deductions for fines above 3%, dirt, free iron, oil and moisture, and rejection above 10% iron or where free magnesium or stainless is present. A lot described only as '6xxx' that mixes 6061, 6063 and 6082 is not Teens: copper in 6061 and manganese in 6082 put a mixed melt outside the 6063 extrusion window, and it is bought as Telic.

The buyers are secondary smelters and remelters with chip dryers or briquette-fed furnaces, chiefly in India, Türkiye, Thailand and Pakistan, and domestic remelters in the country of generation. The United Kingdom exported about 624,000 MT of aluminium scrap of all grades in 2025, 199,000 MT of it to India. Import rules decide which destinations can take turnings at all. India classifies Teens and Telic by name under tariff item 7602 00 10 and asks for a pre-shipment inspection certificate except from listed origins and ports. China admits recycled aluminium raw material only when it meets its metal-content and inclusion limits, and loose oily turnings do not clear. Malaysia requires a certificate of approval, sets a minimum metal content and does not admit pieces under 5 mm. From 21 May 2027 the European Union will allow waste exports only to non-OECD countries on its approved list. Oily swarf can also fall outside the green-list entry that covers clean aluminium scrap, so the oil and moisture figures are settled before a booking. There is no published price for dry, single-alloy 6xxx swarf; loose turnings change hands at about a quarter of the LME cash price at merchants' gates, clean extrusion scrap of the same alloy at well over three-quarters, and a dried, briquetted single-alloy lot is priced between the two on a recovery test. Loose turnings pack at 0.3 to 0.4 t/m³, about 10 to 13 MT in a 20 ft container, so briquetting or baling is what makes a 20 MT payload. CBIL brokers swarf and turnings from named machining plants and processors against a pre-shipment report of alloy by spectrometer, oil and moisture, fines, free iron and a melt-recovery test, on FOB and CFR terms.

Aluminium 6xxx Swarf & Turnings (ISRI Teens / Telic) — buyer questions

What is the difference between ISRI Teens and Telic?

Teens is segregated: borings and turnings of one specified alloy, free of oil, moisture, free iron, stainless steel and magnesium, with fines through 20 mesh at 3% or less. Telic is mixed: two or more alloys, sold on stated maximum zinc, tin and magnesium, with deductions for fines over 3%, dirt, free iron, oil and moisture, and not good delivery above 10% iron or with free magnesium or stainless steel present. Teens is priced nearer to solid scrap; Telic is a smelter grade.

Why do turnings sell at such a discount to extrusion scrap?

Melt loss and handling. Loose chips carry 10 to 15% cutting fluid and oxidise fast: about 17% of the metal is lost if they are charged as they come, about 5% if they are dried and fed under the bath. Each 1% of fluid adds about 2% dross. Loose turnings therefore trade at roughly a quarter of the LME price at a merchant's gate, while clean extrusion offcuts of the same alloy fetch well over three-quarters. Drying, briquetting and keeping one alloy per lot close part of that gap.

Which countries can import aluminium turnings?

India names both grades in its tariff and asks for a pre-shipment inspection certificate from most origins. Türkiye, Thailand and Pakistan take them for secondary alloy. China does not clear loose oily turnings and admits briquettes only when dry and within its metal-content limits. Malaysia sets a minimum metal content and bars pieces under 5 mm, which excludes loose turnings. From 21 May 2027 EU exporters may ship only to non-OECD countries on the EU's approved list.

What should a seller send for a price?

The alloy or alloys, how the swarf is segregated at the machine, the coolant used, monthly tonnage, and whether it is loose, centrifuged, dried or briquetted, with photographs and a recent analysis if there is one. A price is given as a percentage of LME against a pre-shipment test of oil and moisture, fines, free iron and melt recovery, and the load is weighed and sealed at the plant.
