Black Pepper: Vietnam, Brazil & Indonesia

Vietnam 500/550 g/l, Brazil ASTA 570, Lampung black and Muntok white

Most of the world's traded pepper does not come from India, and the three origins outside it each have their own contract language. Vietnam sells black pepper by bulk density: FAQ 500 g/l and 550 g/l are the volume grades, with 570 g/l and 580 g/l above them, typically at 13–13.5% maximum moisture and around 0.5–1% admixture, plus cleaned and steam-sterilised ASTA quality for the US and EU. Brazil ships from Pará, the largest producing state, and Espírito Santo, through Belém and Vila do Conde and through Vitória; its export grades are B1 (550 g/l minimum, 13% moisture, 2% impurity) and ASTA (570–580 g/l, 13% moisture, 1% impurity). Indonesia sells Lampung black pepper from Sumatra, registered as a geographical indication in 2016, at a maximum 13% moisture with piperine reported at 3.29–4.7%, and Muntok white pepper from the Bangka Belitung islands, also a geographical indication, at a minimum 600 g/l density, 13% moisture, 1% foreign matter and 2% light berries. UN Comtrade 2024 declarations put Brazil at 59,817 MT of HS 0904.11 at USD 4,652/MT and Indonesia at 53,954 MT at USD 5,574/MT.

International Pepper Community quotations on 15 September 2026 were USD 6,070/MT for Vietnam 500 g/l, 6,130 for 550 g/l, 8,450 for Vietnamese white, 6,939 for Lampung black, 9,500 for Muntok white and 5,750 for Brazil ASTA 570. Those are market references, not offers. EU entry runs against 5 µg/kg aflatoxin B1, 10 µg/kg total aflatoxins and 15 µg/kg ochratoxin A for pepper, Regulation (EC) 396/2005 pesticide MRLs and ETO-free status, because ethylene oxide is not authorised in the EU; US entry runs against EPA tolerances under 40 CFR 180, where ethylene oxide is tolerated on dried spices at 7 ppm, and FDA, whose Import Alert 99-19 covers Salmonella in spices. CBIL is a commodity brokerage company and brokers origin pepper to grinders and steam sterilisers, seasoning and meat-processing houses, retail packers and importers, against SGS or equivalent inspection of density, moisture, admixture and light berries, a certificate of analysis for mycotoxins, residues and Salmonella where required, a phytosanitary certificate and certificate of origin, in 25–50 kg PP or jute bags, container-load, on FOB, CFR and CIF terms. Excluded origins are not offered, including product re-exported, blended or re-processed through a third country. Every lot moves with a certificate of origin naming the producing plant, mine or grower country, and nothing is quoted before the seller and loading point are known.
